Rainy Season - i'm planning a late-Aug / early Sept trip and wondering what the water quality (for both health and aesthetic reasons) is like during this rainy season, especially since most of the breaks are rivermouths. i'm comfortable with nightly rains but not with murky, brown, unsanitary water.

I am planning to ST Mal Pais area in May-June and would like to know if a 4WD will make it possbile to drive around or if I will get stuck in muddy roads anyway.

Public bus service from San Jose to Hermosa/Jaco - I will go to Costa Rica (San Jose) for a month (04/april to 13/may) to a business work meetings, and I will have only the weekends availables for surfing (from friday night to sunday night). Are there a good public bus service to take me to Hermosa or Jaco Beach, or i will have to rent a car to go these places?

- i was planning a trip in june and july and was wondering if rain is going to be a problem. i was also planning on staying in a cheap hotel but hear there is a lot of theft at those locations. besides surfing where do i go just to have a good time.

any breaks north of here? - I'm looking for a decent break north of Playa Grande...like from the Naranjo area south to Cabo Velas (Morro Hermoso), accessible by 4WD or foot. Popular spots would be good...remote or uncrowded even better. Traveling alone in late March. Open for suggestions.

Car rental - has anyone had good/bad experiences with car rental in Costa Rica? Tips to avoid rip-offs? I have had some bad experiences with "small-print" in other places - any specifics to renting cars in CR. Do I need a 4 wheel drive/SUV?
