strange place we visited this town in 1994 and back then it was full of potheads, tweakers and drunks - mostly young white pastfari dropout wannnabees subsidized by mom and dad, but we saw weapons and there was a lot of petty theft. the place was dirty and basically a shithole. i dont care how good the wave is, who needs the crap (literally) on land. has the town gotten any better? back then it was the pits.

just agree... ... with the last message...an expert wave, on rocks yes but big sets are always breaking before the place they should.Color of the water with a grey day make it more scary than other reef waves that I saw.

Experts only Very tight take off zone. If your not on the peak, you're on the shoulder and the ride will be over by the time you take off, and you're probably in someone's way. If you can fear top-bottom heavy coral reef barrels and win a paddle war with the best of them, then go for it, otherwise stay on the beach or look elsewhere.

Learning? go elsewhere This spot is for experts only. If you think your pretty good, go elsewhere. You must be very good to survive and or not hurt somebody else. Don't ruin it for somebody else so you can tell your buddys you surfed it. Please think before you go out there.

Salsa Is Gnarly......... the paddle out is a cinch but the drop? Look out if your on the peak. I got some waves but one put me out of the water. It was about double overhead drops and I freefell into the pit busted my fin off with my heel (thank god it wasn't my privates) and headed straight to the ding repair shop. Paid a local deaf mute to go find me a fin box and he came back with a freshly sawn tail of some poor saps board. Anyway being epoxy the only way I could get back in the water was to buy a used board. So in closing. We caught it going off thanks to todays technology in swell prediction. Salsa is a world class wave.By the way the locals seemed pretty cool to me and we did not experience any raunch in PV ie: crack heads, thieves, etc. But the road from Limon to PV is laden thick with serious potholes...........

My Thoughts on Purto Viejo [Salsa Brava] Spent 4 days there and loved it, once you check into your locked cabina and all your worries about your stuff being stolen is gone, then its No Worries Mate. Food was great, Imperials were cold, and the surf at Salsa was working perfect!!! Set waves were Rights, and inside a little (15-20meters or so) was rights ans lefts which were a litte smaller then the set waves. Reef booties are a good idea. Cant wait to go back.
