Isla cocles
Paddle out to the island.....The left reef break is usually better than the beach break.

Not Crowded?
I was there in April 06 and the swell just started. Salsa wasn't breaking yet it was only about 4 to 6 ft. And there were at least 40 people at Cocles. The main peak was packed. It was a fun wave and a good warm up for what came the next day. Salsa going off at 8ft. Faces were like 18ft. Anyway ........ Life is good........

Its not far... just travel south a bit... look for white sandy beach on your left.

The Caribbean coast gets a lot more good waves than anyone knows about. It is kind of good although because there are no crowds. Most of the people on the carib side are second generation of people who fled Jamaica when it started getting south, so the east coast is way more laid back but also more primitive. I have been going 5 years in a row and I hit both coasts every time. Best way to go is schedule the trip, then check LOLA swell charts before leaving to determine the best coast to go to first.

carib or pacific?
Does it break as good on the Carib side as it does on the pacific side. I had a great time At Tamarindo, Playa Grande, and other close breaks. I'm considering going to the Carib side this time but do'nt want to miss the good surf. Any input would be appreciated.

fun
I was at cocles for 3 weeks. tends to have waves every single day i was their. When it starts to get big, it closes out most of the time. Thats ur sign to hit SaLSA BRAVA.
Over all, very fun wave.

Playa Cocles
Playa cocles is super fun. The rip is kind of crazy, but the waves are super fun. If you are not experienced and it gets big, stay out of the water. Not too many people either. I was there in April of 2005.

cocles is consistently with waves but it is consistently closed out most of the time. I lived in puerto viejo for a year and it is true that it gets good a few times
