Sliding Rock Access |
| |
From Pago Harbour: Take main highway west (about 10 miles as the crow flies). Turn left at Taputimu. Follow road all the way down hill. Road makes a 90 degree bend to the right at bottom (near the ocean). You are now at Papafa’ase’e Cove. Sliding Rock is directly in front of you. Park under coconut trees. Follow short path down low cliff. Enter water via either channel or jumping off rocks to the right. Very short paddle out to the line-up. |

Additional Surfing Infos |
| | A south-facing break fairly immune to all but the most southerly of Trade Winds. Very consistent usually offering something of interest even if the rest of Tutuila is totally flat and/or blown-out.
Fast, steep, jacking peak so don’t hesitate on take-off. Mostly a left but on smaller days an occasional right can be had. Coral encrusted lava shelf is a ‘swell magnet’ that tends to pick up and amplify even the slightest hint of swell. When conditions are right, a thick, powerful, wave peeling off perfectly for a good 50 yards. However, depending on swell size and direction (a strong west-southwest is especially bad), it can be extremely treacherous just to get in and out of the water let alone surf there. Just in front of the take-off zone a row of jagged, toothy rocks awaits anyone unlucky enough to get caught inside, and huge sets can completely close out the channel, crashing onto the rocks lining the shore. When BIG (over 6’) a strong rip runs through the channel. It is utterly futile to paddle against this rip and the only way in is a rock-dodging-heart-stopping-fin-busting ride all the way to shore. Getting caught in the wrong place at the wrong time here is certain disaster, so study conditions carefully (how to get in and out of the water, big scary clean-up sets that close out the channel, etc.) before committing yourself.

Overview |
| |
Atmosphere |
Very scenic and majestic area. Rugged volcanic cliffs. Great for photos. To the east of break is a natural 'slip and slide'. Large flat rock covered with algae good for sliding across while standing (hence the name Sliding Rock). Small sandy beach and shallow lagoon in front of break. Nice hang-out spot but also lots of trash and local thieves who will go through your stuff in search of money while you are out surfing, so be careful. |

Sliding Rock, American Samoa

spooky place
Sliding Rock is a really dangerous wave - if you blow your wave, just in front of the bowl is toothy coral that juts up clear out of the water angling out at you. Super gnarly. But the barrel is amazing - like mini Chopes. No shit. Go and check it ou
