After leaving the Kaikoura township head north for about 15km´s until you reach the coast line again. Ahead you will see Maungamanu but before that, a turn off to your right cross a trainline, follow the shingle road until you see a bunch of cars parked up. The big peak with everyone sitting on it is Meatworks. DistanceWeek-end trip WalkInstant access (< 5min) Easy to find?Easy to find Public access?Public access Special accessDon't know |

I only mentioned sharks as above, as I have heard of a guy spotting a White Pointer here. Don´t let that scare you, I have surfed this spot for years, and never seen one. On big days watch the paddle out there is a large rock that sticks out on lowish tides. When it´s big here, it´s heavy, and the locals here charge, so don´t get in their way if you are new to this spot. Try not to go left too often, there seems to be a rip on the left side, and the rock ! Other than that, it´s a nice wally powerfull wave on it´s day, enjoy.
Atmosphere
Generally the atmosphere here is pretty mellow with everyone enjoying the scenery and the waves. A nice spot to hang out and camp also.
General
Great after a long day in summer, heading back to Kaikoura Bakery for a feed of sausage rolls and strawberry flavoured milk !!

Second peak - The locals are all good there, you get one chance to make the wave, it you don't then you're pretty fucked( snakes and drop ins). But that's all good, there's a second peak, it's a mellower ride just to the right.
Around christmas time a fuckn' huge Great White migrates past the place to chomp on seal's, it clear's the line up real quick.

sick - Meatworks is an epic wave when its working. I travelled to this place 5 weeks in a row and encountered 5 ft plus surf each time. Get up early as the hills behind meatworks create offshores early and clean as A-FRAMES.
