Additional Surfing Infos
Depending on the size of the swell(and the tide) you will either see this lining up with Indicators across the mouth of 'Whale Bay' - or the wave will die in the bay and reform on the headland. Go in off the rocks, watch for the current as you'll be pushed down the line making positioning for take-off harder than it needs to be.
Whale has different moods with different tides and swells. People say it is mellow, but actually its only mellower when its a bit bigger, when it breaks further out from the sucky, inside rocks. At low tide and 2 to 5 feet it breaks hollow along the rock shelf, which a couple of sections where exposed rocks are way too close-you really need to know these rocks. This can be a really fun, very hollow and sucky, great little wave (8/10). Above this size it breaks in the middle of the bay and is more of a fat wall (7/10), but there are some rocks in the bay towards the end of the ride at this size also. Neither wave is really world class, but just damn good fun. Indicators, however, is world class.
  Overview
Atmosphere Not as steep as Indicators, but still a great ride along this portion of the Raglan Experience. Watch for rocks when the swell is small.

I spent a week in Rags earlier this year and scored good waves on all the points. But for out of towner i must say that although whale doesn't have the power of indies, it's still a quality wave, alot shorter walk and far less crowded. Indie's and Manu is probably best left to the locals on the smaller days

smells like your mum
Surfed here a bit over the years and I wouldnt say Whale is fat or slow, ok copared to Indies its not quite up there but Ive had days when its been doing its thing and from the water it didnt even look like whale with some heavy square setions and a barrel big enough to stand bolt up right in.Its a great alteritive if the crowds on the other points and lets face it only a dick would complain about the waves in that part of the country.
