Additional Surfing Infos
This is a beach break and is affected by shifting banks. But when the banks are good, it can be really good. Both lefts and rights, barrels, A-frame waves, it just depends on the banks.

There is also a left hand reef break to the south of the beach. This can hold big swells. It is a fairly hard core wave, and is worth checking out when the swell is over 5 foot on the beach. I've heard it can handle over 10 foot, but I've never seen it this big. It breaks over rocks and can produce a long left hand wall with barreling sections. You have to walk around the rocks and jump off the rocks in betweem the sets.
  Overview
Atmosphere In summer the beach is crowded with sunbathers and swimmers. There is a surf life saving club and a shop. Port Waikato has a small local communtity. In winter the beach is pretty much deserted.
General This spot on its day can have awesome waves and is worth a look when the easterlies are blow'n.

Sick on it's day
I've surfed the reef here at triple over head, an easy take off to a gnarly barrel inside, very long wall(5 guys in the water). If it's big always walk out to the point to check the reef as sometimes it's impossiblt to see from the beach, also had very fun A-frame son the beach. You'll hardly ever see this place crowded. A solid sw-w swell is ideal.

I've surfed it over 3 metres left handers off the point. Was makable all the way to the beach. We used to go there as opposed to raglan as there was always less crowds and quicker to get to from Auckland. Watch the rip tho....

Hi Pete
February to May is probably the best time to surf NZ, especially on the West Coast. We tend to get more Southeasters and clean swells. Head to Raglan and Taranaki. And watch weather maps for Lows that send swell to the North East coast. The water is warmish in February but getting cold by May. You need a good steamer. Hope this helps - Happy surf'n
