EDIT
ORIGINAL
Lyall Bay has one main spot "The Wall" which is a very good left hander, breaking off a break wall at the eastern end of the beach. The rest of 1500 meters of beach is made up of avrage beach breaks, nothing flash.
There is also a bombora off shore which is rearly surfed, and only breaks on a large swell.

Atmosphere

As most city beaches it can get crowded, especailly in summer. There is little localisim as so many people surf there. A great place to learn, but once you've passed the beginner stage
the are big and better waves in the area.
Also remember due to the close proxsimity of the south island this can limit the ammount of swell that gets in to Wellington. So when Wellington gets good you know the Wairarapa is going off.

Lyall rules - Howzit going?Lyall Bay rocks!I learnt to surf there ,I started on a polystyrene floater,It used to give me a wicked rash on my chest.I used to go out in 80 knot stherly winds, sometimes 10 metre swells.U had to jump in the "Hillman Hunter"and drive round to near the "bombora"by Hungerford rd and jump off from there .Messy but big ,no one else out.Lyall Bay had many different treats to offer the hardcore grommet.
