Respect Locals
Respect locals at this break. A good right hander that only breaks on the biggest of easterly swells, but when crowded, longboarders are dickheads and catch every wave, not letting anyone else have a wave, even the locals!

Dead Water
Ordinarily, there is no surf here, hence the shitty rating - the break is protected from its best angle by the port - but every now and then conditions combine perfectly to let the bigger swells in. Probably 5-10 good days a year although in January it was hot for 5 straight days. I was blown away to see this wave holding 5ft, clean as right to left - with rides from the port end all the way across to East Pier. Needless to say, I caned home, grabbed my board and got out there. RESPECT the locals or you'll end up regretting it. Napier breaks are never really crowded but if you're a visitor - just basic respect and you'll make good surfing mates. Look out for the man-made rocks that line the shore here from WWII turret guns and embankments. They're like bloody sandpaper.. Pull out of the wave before you get that far...
