This stretch of coast picks up SW trades and is generally big, rough and dangerous rips, with predominantly SW winds, especially winter. In summer more NE winds and calmer seas giving sometimes EXCELLENT clean, powerful waves best around 4-6'. Type of spot you have to "be there on the day". When huge here, and SW winds, Shipwreck Bay up north is good.
Overview
Atmosphere
Surfed this place for over 40 yrs and always get good summer surf. The banks are changable so have to be there at right time and tide.
Baileys Great Fun
I visted NZ in 2004 at the end of december, we got to baileys beach late afternoon was onshore but a solid 4ft of swell, we drove the trusty hire car up the beach looking for banks and gutters. We found a nice little formation 200 metres north on the beach. We woke up around 7am the next day and went down to baileys and there wasnt one person out, the tide was incoming wind offshore, went down to our newly found bank and got some great fun waves just 2 of us out, going back in September cant wait....
