Best access is through Hikurangi(situated just out of Whanggarei) out through Marua Rd and on to Whananaki south Rd,then takeHaile Rdto join up to Whananaki north Rd.
The bar is a left-hander that is fast and best surfed on low incoming tide.The swell has to pretty big to have the power to get it working because of the large headland.

stuck in 82'
Ilived in NZ in 82'. Surfed Sandy Bay mostly. Used to see big swells out of the south smacking Whananaki. Should have walked the coast. Went there once, it was 1 foot and perfect. You guys in NZ, ecspecially northland, have it made. Now I surf el cap in California.
