Take the Motorway North, from Auckland untill you get to Warkworth. Turnoff towards Pakiri untill you get to the Omaha/Tawharanui turnoff(well signposted) there and follow Takatu rd out to the beach. This road is Dirt metal and very windy.
Heaps of variety at this spot. The place is seperated into three main beaches. The Eastern beach is best in smaller swells. The Middle beach (The one straight out from the Carpark) is best in bigger swells (When the Troppies come down this place can be the only spot on the coast with offshore winds). The Western beach is a longer beach and has reefs on either side and one in the middle all these reefs can have good waves if theres enough swell. There are banks up and down all the beaches but their very inconsistent. If your willing to go for a bit of a walk you can ussually find a break to yourself. Check it a day or so after a Cyclone has passed and the southerlies are blowing and it will not disapoint. This beach is a Marine Reserve so theres the possibility of sharks and theres always plenty of Rays to spook you!
Overview
Atmosphere
This is a beautifull place. The land backing onto the beach is Regional parkland so there arent any Houses to ruin the landscape. During the week or during winter you can really feel isolated even though its so close to Auckland. A lot of the time its small but you can ussually get out for a grovel on most days.
General
Its when the Big cyclones come down the coast that it comes into its own. When most beaches on the coast have white water to the horizon this spot can be 4 foot ,perfect hollow and fast waves. You can tell when this spots been mentioned in a surf report because it gets packed but otherwise its ussually empty.
