Great beach break, near the top of the north island. adjacent to department of Conservation campsite. Very nice beach with a unique pink sand.Park at the campsite, short walk too beach.Best at eastern end of beach. Has very tubular waves especially the rights.
Overview
Atmosphere
One of the most beautiful and scenic spots in the north island. Has a remote wild feel to it, and is seldom visited.Popular holiday spot in summer(especially at christmas), otherwise deserted except for the occasional surfer or fisherman.
General
If there is a good sized swell on the east or west coasts and a southerly quarter wind, then this is the best option.

Ever seen a Macko Shark?
In the mid 1970's we lived at Spirits Bay for a full summer - the camping was free at that time. My most memorable image is of the Macko Shark caught in the surf by a fisherman. They hung it in a tree to weigh it. Came in at 365 pounds - a man eater. It scared the surfers and swimmers out of the water for a few days. Have fun in the surf but watch out for the sharks. Good luck.

dirty?
Dude Spirits Bay has probably the cleanest water and air than anywhere in the world! Nearest house is like a billion miles away. Incredible place, you'll have it to yourself!
