omaha
I'm a local at omaha and it is usually flat as a pancake but it can sometimes be pretty good when theres a cyclone swell and the banks are perfect, so you should go somewhere else like te arai or pakiri

shit omaha beach devolopment
In the mid 70's the Omaha beach development built a 1km long causeway across the bay with only a single 50m bridge. Before the causeway there were many natural channels in the bay where the causeway was placed. The small bridge is too small for the volume of water and so has caused the formation of a very deep single channel. This channel slowly curved closer and closer to the Omaha beach spit end and after a few years it was cutting into the beach itself. This caused the once natural harbour on the Leigh side of the bay to silt up with sand (this is where the water use to flow into the bay) forever changing the natural flow of water into the bay. The water now flows into the bay around the tip of the Omaha spit, destroying the sand bars that use to extend into the sea. As a result they had to build the sea walls because during a storm they lost a fair bit of beach. The best way for the sand bars to be naturally replenished on the spit and to further out into the sea is by increasing the width of the bridge on the causeway and putting in more bridges. Even once this is done it will take maybe up too a decade to fix itself. This next bit isn’t for Mcboingboing but is abuse for Auckland people that continue to move to Omaha beach. What a great development. This is a 'perfect playground', so Auckland people continue to develop the spit and then frolic in the human waste that is dumped form the development, into the bay. Enjoy.

ti point
what happened was the wave u surf Ti point was a really long left hander, however in the 80's they dredges the channel and built the groynes..the break ceased to exist. thos the sand started to reappear early 80's and the now famous Omaha bar formed...in the last few years the banks have become pretty suss, and the bar itself is pretty irregular.
