Finally. Heaven.
3 formally sun starved english boys arrived in Mangawhai only a few days off the plane into Auckland in early January. Remember the shocking weather you guys had throughout December? Well the day we made it to Mangawhai Heads the clouds were blasted from the sky and the sun.. well she blazed. After dodging the suicidal mynah birds on the road up we arrived at about 830pm. My first view of the glorious Pacific. Ever. I sat on the chalky rock and gazed at her for at least an hour as my boys busied themselves preparing food out the back of our Econovan. The surf was flat but the place echoed with potential. After three months and covering nearly every kilometer of coast on both Islands it was time to return to the drizzle of Old Blighty. Not before we returned to Mangawhai though, and this time it was going off. I had surfed better waves during my three month tenure but nowhere bestowed such feelings of completion as Mangawhai did. That night, after scrambling to the end of the rocky groin in total darkness, we sat and let the incoming tide wash over our legs, swearing to never forget this place. Swearing to return.Thank you Mangawhai, thank you NZ.
