North Island New Zealand - With about a zillion miles of coast-line and a relatively mild (wet) climate, North Island is a real surfers paradise. The surfing near the main urban areas can get a bit crowded, similarly the more famous spots such as Raglan and Piha can have crowds. Our advice is get out and explore..... there are many many secret spots (which we don't want on this site), and huge areas where you'll find beaches with nobody else in the water. Unlike Australia, you are unlikely to be bothered in the water by big beasties.
The North Island can be thought of as two different surf areas, as the West Coast and East Coast have very different characteristics - the West is reputed to be rough and wild, the East calmer and more picturesque. However, don't be lulled by this simplicity - each region has its own characteristics, with pristine waves on the West Coast and powerful waves on the East (check out Gisbourne)
