Tavarua ! - !
- so we intended to go to Wilkes Passage given the chances of surfing Restaurants seamed nil. We dropped a couple off there who had been lucky enough to have their names drawn from a hat that morning and could surf the perfect 3 - 6ft Rests! I was totally miffed and had to go to Wilkes by myself... or so I thought, the boat driver got on the radio to the Tavarua guys and suddenly i was allowed to surf! 10 bucks, a bunch of waivers and a little boat ride later - I'm there. That place has the best shaped wave and the take off is easy - if you don't mind looking at a few coral heads just 3m in front of you! It is hollow and shallow and the reef really bites. Everything you read about it being a place to STAY on your board is true - if you fall off and hit the bottom, you will hurt yourself.

If you want to surf it - you have to call Tavarua from the surrounding resorts and put your name in a hat just in case someone else who is on the list cancels OR pay the $2500US for a week there and just surf it everyday.

Cheers

Jim

Hey Stirlo .....
Find the booking office in Santa Barbara for Tavarua and talk to Dave Clark. He MAY give you a name or two of people who control the guestlist for each week on the island. If you whine and cry enough (or the opposite thereof) you may weasel a spot on ...... then pray for a huge swell with a lot of west in it ...... yep, Restaurants doesn't break that often. Oh yeah ..... be sure to cough up $3500.00 flying from Los Angeles ..... start collecting bottles or cans or sumthin' and never STOP DREAMING!!!

Consistancy & High Tide
I have been to Tavarua over 14 weeks over 12 trips. I have gotten the Restaurant good and over four foot only five total days. When its on, it is fantastic and MUCH better than Cloudbreak. The wave sections swoop up and you just gun it thru barreling sections. It is unreal.
But you really have to ride it a low tide with the reef around the island totally exposed. At high tide the currents are too strong. The owners and boatmen don't even surf it then. At low tide you are riding at a level under the main table top reef that surrounds the island. The reef is also very bad. You don't fall forward.

bunch of arse
if anyone looked at a map (a swell map especially) you'd see that around 90% of the swell here come out of the tasman sea at a SW dir...its usually half the size that cloudbreak is due to a 180 degree wrap round the island...best wind would be a SSW, the SE trade bumps it up pretty bad unless its really light..but poss is one of the most perfect waves in the world, sometimes it doesnt section AT ALL, just perfect peeling tapered walls...

Best Darn Wave I've Ever Surfed
Just took a trip to Tavy from 9/16/04 to 9/25/04.. Restaurants broke 6 days in a row with easy 10 foot faces.. by far the best waves I've ever had in my life. The wave is so much more powerful then I thought and incredibly shallow.. I was expecting a playful wave however there are no mistakes allowed here. I'm sure it's not always like this, but I can truely say I had the best time of my life and I don't think I'll ever have waves like that again in my life. Cloudbreak was 30ft and just too out of control except for the last 2 days of the trip and that's when Restaurants died off.
