oh yes, "offshores" - as mentioned further down the thread - the "offshore trades" at Frigates can howl howl howl, and they are sideshore on the outside. so dont expect glassy perfection every day - some days you'll get it, but most of the time you'll be dealing with fairly heavy cross-chop by lunchtime. it aint perfect. (now, the Lane, that's almost perfect, it just needs to lose about 23,000 people who surf it :-)
yup re: Waidroka - stayed there for two days in 2002. I left fast. it's a gloomy place and you are dependent on the Two Rays for boat access to the breaks. one of them is billed as a "beginner break", which it isnt - it's actually barely rideable. grab your pack and head out to wilder, more interesting, better Karma places...

To Pissed off in California - Yeh, I reckon you guys really did stink it up out there at Frigates. Bastards with 25+ guys!!! I couldn't fuckin' believe it, no matter, those alleged "offshore" trades are actually sideshore most of June as I found out. Place fucking sucked.

FUCK WAIDROKA - Uncrowded? Not if you stay at Waidroka and get fleeced by the two fucking Arizona hicks (Ray Sr. and Ray jr.) who run the place. They pack 25 guys into a boat and basically fuck your session by bringing their own crowd. Oh, and did I mention that they are two of the most surly bastards around? Hardly the most friendly hosts one could have. They also go out at the same time every day and have no clue on how to catch good waves. We missed several evening glass sessions because they have the same set boat schedule every day. They just want the cash and they really don't care if you get good waves or not. The dorms suck and are uncomfortable, mosquito infested and they are adding more! Just when you thought there were already enough guys in the lineup! My apologies to all other surfers at Frigates, it must have been a real bummer to see our boat pull up and ruin your session. Sorry! We were victims too!

Is Frigate's cheap? Is it a close out? Stay tuned... - Frigate's can end in a heavy heavy close-out and tour of the reef after a Pipeline-like barrel (no escape), but when it is working it is one sweet wave that goes and goes and goes...I have photographic proof! Is it cheap to get out there? Depends on how you do it. You can camp out at Pena's on Yanuca Island and you can't get much cheaper than that. But you gotta know how to do it and be dedicated to getting good waves, not a luxury Fijian vacation! Oh yeah, fuck the American and Aussie global surf tourism industry assholes. They are all a bunch of greedy bastards and the absolute scum sucking bottom feeders of the surfing world. Learn how to do it yourself and do it locally!

Waidroka/Frigates - Frigates can get really good. But not easy or cheap to get to. I saw it absolutely pumping but a hairy closeout at the end section. I stayed at Waidroka and yes the yanks running the place are definately there to make money. But they do offer a much cheaper alternative to the other resorts to the north. The Fijians working there seemd quite happy to me but they are an easy going lot anyway. Don't blame the owners for developing the land, blame the local government who approves it!!! Anyway not much else to do there if you don't surf, it is not a resort and does not even have a pool. You need boat access to all waves and that cost between $20-50 FJD a pop per person. If you go try Wati's(a happy local) banana pancakes YUMMMM!!!

Frigates - Frigates......Does this place suck or does it go off? Can people other then pissed off Ozzies answer this question?
By anonymous , 05-06-2003
boycott waidroka!! - DO NOT STAY AT WAIDROKA, THAT IS IF YOU HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR LOCAL FIJIANS AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT. THE PLACE IS RUN BY MONEY-GRABBING AMERICANS WHO DO NOT HAVE ANY INTEREST IN SURFING OTHER THAN MAKING PROFITS OUT OF IT. THEY ARE TEARING DOWN THE RAINFOREST TO BUILD MORE HOUSES AND THEY TREAT THE LOCAL PEOPLE LIKE SHIT!!

Waidroka Bay Resort - I am think of staying at the Waidroka Bay Resort in late July for a week. The main purpose of the trip is surfing, but a nice, convenient, quiet, reasonably cheap accomodation would be a bonus. Any suggestions ?

bad luck, hope it is better when i go. - I am going in 6 weeks or so, and from the online reports i have read Fiji sounds pretty lame for surfing.. I can't believe some Yanks own it when it is water/reef...Scam.Anyway i too want to know if i can camp or live in some locals place for a week. Send me an email if you know anyone or anything i might want to consider b4 going..thnaks!PS) Dee Why point does rip! it is great eh.. Pity the water is so cold most of the year.. And yeah i agree about Indo too, WIKED surf at Ulawatu and sanur reef (i think they are right names)Anyway when did you go mate? What time of the year was it?I am going mid May...Sounds like it is commercial in fiji? BAli was too tho, and still can find great places to stay and cheap boat rides and taxis etc..I'll find out for myself soon i guess...
