Additional Surfing Infos
You have to know exactly where your going cause its easy to miss your turn off and get lost. Get a good boat or zodiac and your in buisness. You gotta be a keen surfer cause the waves aren't easy to surf.I ,ve lived in cairns on and of for 20 years and acc0ording to this guys claim there is only one place it could be as i know every nook and cranny up there and it would be high island of palm cove.It would break ahandfull of times ayear and nothing like he claims.Get out to the reef is where you find the waves.Point there is no great barrier reef 30mins from cairns then 20mins out by boat ya tosser. The GBR is 25km out.
  Overview
Atmosphere It's on the Great Barrier Reef so you can expect to be sharing the water with some big fish. The islands are like a magnet for swell and it can get pretty epic, the reef is pretty shallow which makes the waves really hollow.
General Soooo much fun but a bit of a hassel getting there, well worth it cause you will score sick waves if you hit it at the right time.

balls of steel!
I have recently moved south for uni and have taken up surfing mostly on the sunny coast and am looking for a spot to ride at home up north on the holdays but i think that this spot takes the meaning of balls of steel to a whole new level. I fish a fair bit around Double Island and there isnt really a more shark infested area inside the edge of the Great Barrier Reef than Double Island. I have seen the break that you mean and i will admit that it is quite decent when there is an offshore breeze going past the island and on occasion i have even seen barrels there big enough to surf but i would need a million bucks to surf there.

The Area between Double Island and the reef atolls is a breeding area for sharks, and whats worse, most of the sharks that I have seen and caught there have been tigers, the biggest nudging 11 foot (and bigger beyond the outer reef)! It would take alot of convincing for me to jump in and paddle around on a surfboard there (and the wave is way too small to bother with skis and tow ropes).

Have any of you guys been out there when there is a cyclone off the coast? I have seen it and when it starts pumping you could get some good rides (providing you don't eat reef).

I hope to see one of you guys out there surfing the island next time i take the boat past there, just to see how surfable it actually is and whether that can convince me to get in the water with my board sometime...
