The wreck can be a pretty decent surf spot, but only when its pumping. Main beach tends to draw in back packers who have just scored themselves a board and walk to the beach thinking they can paddle out anywhere. Consequently it can get pretty packed and tempers can flare up real quick. The Pass is the same, super nice break (when there's swell)but generally too busy on a weekend. In my opinion tallows/broken head (Cape Byron headland) is a great surf spot, it can get pretty gnarley and it's definately not for beginners, so at least there arn't any back packers cramming the line up. If your'e prepared for a little drive then Lennox heads is definately the way forward. Some awsome breaks (and cool locals)

WRECKAGE
The Wreck, ahhh I've had some classic days here. Going back 20 years, there used to be good A-Frames but like anywhere the banks come and go. Anyway I guess it's the same but just a bit more crowded. The pass still had 200 people out back then with all the dive boats and odd surf craft.

usually closes, rarely gets swell(dont wait around!) but can be good, if the wreck is good the pass is better, if the wreck has 80 people the pass has 150, dont come to byron to surf, its rediculous.

I grew up surfin this place , and I have to agree , it really only does work sometimes. But hey take a walk up to Clarkes or across to Dolphins. The best thing about the wreck is sitting in the park after a surf watchin all the hot chicks take a shower! Oh and being able to park and watch your mates get pitted.
Byron rocks, but too many tourists have killed its quiet and relaxed atmosphere that it used to once have.
