Want to Surf in Early September
Hey! I'm going to Taipei from San Francisco for a conference at the end of August, but want to stay a week or so through the first week of September to check out some surf--Where's good? Do I have to sign up for a "surf camp" for access to breaks? Should I bring my own board or is it easy enough to rent? Anyone around and free at that time and want to join?

Surfer 101
If you are going to Kenting, the popular surfing spot down south of Taiwan, there is a good place called Afei Surfshop to rent boards, surf coaching, and they have boardings with very beautiful Balinese style rooms. The shopkeeper Afei is a very cool guy! You can check their website on www.afei.com.tw

yo mark
In terms of saving cash, you can definitely save a decent amount of $. I'm working like 10 hours a day and I'm banking about 3k (USD) a month. Rent, depending on where you are, can be super cheap. I really can't say one bad thing about the people. Super friendly and really helpful. If you have any other questions you can email me. seanc.martin@hotmail.com.

Cheers.

fines and what not
yeah its true that if the police see you they can fine you in certain places. But the chances are this won't happen, a) you probably don't speak Chinese so most cops just don't feel like dealing with you, b)i doubt they will swim out to yell at you, and a lot of spots are off the beaten path so cops aren't gonna show up there. In general all the locals, including the ones at Dashi (Daxi) have been totally cool. If you don't act like an agro surfer and know how to share waves and smiles you should be fine.

True?
I read in a magazine that if the police see you surfing, you'll be arrested and fined.... perhaps even deported. Is there any truth to this? And, in general, and the local korean surfers friendly to new locals from England?
