I have to agree about mike and alma, really wonderful people that Ive know for many years, they are Phil/Americans, from San Diego area. They run a first rate resort, and fine dining concession. If you have traveled and surfed here in the PI's, you can appreciate, the cleanliness and absolute commitment they put into the whole thing, The food was some incredible fusion. As for the place, I can only describe it as kauai in the 50,s, Note: Your at the end of the road, the population is very light at this point, this is marcos country, it got very good cash infrastructure infusions. Its nice, fly from manila is easy. Hey, if you kite your double blessed here. Note, and onshore at the resort, just go around to a point set up that makes it an offshore, blowing your tube open, aye, ask mike???

Hey Quin Hey quin, firstly well said and secondly thankyou! It's been years now since i've read this forum and it's nice to see someone 'set the record straight'.i corosponded with a certain 'malec' at times and was that ever frustrating!I never could understand a surfer who thought it wrong to teach the kids the beauty of the ocean through surfing? He seemed to also think there where no waves there and actually since i've been back a few more times i have scored some nice little day's(nothing obviously as good as when i first went there and was so stoked i was inspired to post it on this website). last time i was back i actually ventured from the main beach to the blue lagoon and was well impressed by the outstanding beauty of the place, next time i shall definetly stay there. Pagudpud is a beautiful place with an amazing soul, the surf is not the most consistent but if you can be content with waiting for the swell and appreciate the peacefullness and the joy of the people then you are living a dream most people not only surfer's dream about.

Mike and Alma / Kapaluan Beach Resort Mike and Alma are great people. The food is good after a day of surfing. Try the bannana caramel ice cream.

Yo brah! Mike 'n' Almas place is right in front of d breaks you see the photos of here.. except for the one entitled 'Pagudpud Proper' which is actually a little reef in front of Saud beach. And yes the waves do get that good - but I advise going during typhoon season: Aug - Oct. coz da rest of the year da winds r typically from the NE and onshore at Blue Lagoon - th that pic you see of Pagudpud proper will be offshore then! You should just try to contact Mike and get his perspective on things - after all he lives there. The Philippines has many secret nooks of surf and beauty and this is certainly one of the tops!

pagudpud GENTLEMAN?!!ive checking alot of info n reading the threads on this place, and to me,i feel its worth a try to go there.ive surfed the philippines for awhile now and know that its a gamble-a roll of the dice.i could get better n more consistent waves in any of the surf meccas, but thats not what im after.i just want a tropical wave thats fun to exciting with minnimal surfers.ive been lucky to travel for waves and they havent all been epic trips, but i never thought of it as a waste of time or money, but just as an experience to meet people n culture..we all know the risks of traveling in developing countries, and we accept them because of the thought of experiencing something new-we just pray something unfortunate wont happen to us..traveling for waves is just like our preference for boards or style of surfing-to each his/her own and hopefully be tolerant for others reasons to do things that differ from ourselves...my question to those in the know is this:is the blue lagoon a place or a place to stay n is mike and almas place in front of that hollow, shallow inviting left?uhh that was 2 questions..any help would be thankful..ok,much aloha to u all

For the Big Record (TOM - drop me an email!) I actually took the time to read all these postings, having not viewed this board in a long time, and had to cringe at what I was reading at times. Most of it is false if not downright assinine. So I am here to set the record straight on Pagudpud - for I am a 'Westerner' who has visited this region a number of times. Pagupdud is a province in far NW Ilocos Norte. It is my opinion the most beautiful province in all of the Ilocos. Like Costa Rica was 30 years ago - lush, clean, natural - 'la pura vida'. The province hosts a number of quality surfing breaks, mostly centered at 'The Blue Lagoon' (as pictured), which is about 30 minutes north of Saud Beach (often erroneously refered to as Pagudpud Beach) proper. Blue Lagoon has numerous excellent, high quality reef breaks - but beware of the prevailing NE winds of winter. Ideally you would go in summer on a typhoon swell. Then you might find crystalline dream barrels galore. Now, to address the rest: Mike, the resort owner, and his wife, exemplify a special kind of Pinoy hospitality and spirit. They make it a point to extoll the natural and cultural elements which surround them, and welcome with a friendly disposition anyone to come and enjoy their waves and culture. As for travel dangers - you are not exactly going to Iraq, but neither is this Beverly Hills. It is about as safe as the Philippines gets, but travel is never a failsafe proposition. If you are that scared, then go stay with grandma instead. Finally, on teaching kids to surf, you have got to be kidding! Kids will be kids and will look for a good time anywhere they can. To teach them to surf is to give them a special joy, healthy activity, and talent they may carry with them for the rest of their lives. Anyone who takes the time and effort to do that should be commended, not crucified - just be sure to teach them proper surfing etiquette and to share some waves as well (seems each new generation forgets these niceties more and more). But the next time you are out watching the sunset with the saltwater dripping off your hair and earlobes, remember that you are mortal, and so, while you're still alive, hold that blazing sun in your heart and give it to others... especially those less fortunate. Mabuhay!
