Lavini's Access |
| |
Take a bus or jitney to Appari (sp?), which is a city on the northern coast of Luzon in Cagayan province. Once in Appari, ask a tricycle driver to take you to the pier. The cost of the tricycle is five pesos a person, but they will likely try to charge an extra ten or fifteen pesos for your stuff. Don't pay more than twenty pesos extra and if the tricycle driver argues, tell him you will take down his number and report it to the mayor. |

Additional Surfing Infos |
| | Don't let the tricycle drivers rip you off. There are plenty of places to stay in Appari, but I would probably choose the Ryan Hotel because it's close to everything you need (Cindy's bakery has American products, several restaurants nearby, and a couple of internet cafes at the Ryan mall). Leng Leng's is a good, safe restaurant to eat at. Local surfers have taken up riding the waves at the pier. Waves are often breaking all along the northern coast of Luzon, but they don't get too big that often and they are definitely best around the pier. Try not to disturb the fishermen bringing in their nets in the morning because that's just rude (in the Philippines, respect is very important). The best months that I know of are April and May. If the west coast isn't breaking and you want a little adventure, cruise up through Vegan and check out the Northern coast. Aside from Appari you can visit nice beaches in Claveria, Gonzaga, as well as some beautiful islands around Sta. Ana. Check out Port Irene as well.

Overview |
| |
Atmosphere |
Appari is a fishing town... there isn't much in the way of wealth in this part of the Philippines so things are not quite as nice as other places in this country. The people are Ilokano so they are very kind and hospitable. Many people come around this part of the Philippines to hunt for buried treasure (this is where much of Yamashita's gold is buried), so if you have a metal detector make sure you bring it. The surf is good, but not epic by any means. I call it Lavini's becuase Alister Lavini was a man I met there who inspired me to work hard. He is now in New Zealand training to become a professional boxer. |

Good times. Eat at Leng Leng's, visit the SexBomb Disco, and hang with the local fishermen. |
