By boat from Takeshiba in Tokyo (7 hours overnight or 2 hours JetFoil), Kurihama in Kanagawa (1.5 hours), Atami in Shizuoka (1 hour), plane from Haneda (30min.).
This is the main beach in Motomachi Oshima, although it is hardly ever crowded. It's a short 10-minute paddle. Be careful of rocks during lower tides.
Works best with approaching typhoon. Generally gets 3 or 4 days of good surf with every typhoon. Waves start arriving when typhoon slips south of Shimoda and peaks when the typhoon crashes into the Ogasawa Islands (due south of Oshima).

The local community are some of the nicest people I have met. While a buddy and I were exploring the island people were constantly asking us if we needed a ride. A generous stranger even let us borrow their car to ride around in! Overall, good times and beautiful place.
