From Tokyo by ship (Toukai-kisen) 7 hours. Or by plane from Tokyo-Choushi airport 45 minutes. The beach is on the other side of the island from town so follow the road out to the airport and turn left the road takes you down past the beach, you can turn off anywhere, its a big beach.
Further up the beach towards the missile launch site there is are good banks, butlocals might be a bit more aggressive here. The OIOI World Championship used to be held here.
Overview
Atmosphere
If you go in summer it there are more people, more girls, if it's flat try the onsen. Stay at the temporary campsite right next to the beach (it's at the sports ground and it's free) and the actuall campsite got destroyed in an earthquake! You can check the wave for this spot by going to : http://www.cwoop.com/taitocam.html
General
When i was there it was big and the banks were not so good but it is supposed to get good sometimes i guess you just have to be lucky.

niijima a.k.a. nampajima (pick up island)
If you can't pick up and go when a typhoon is stirring up the surf, plan on going during the O-BON week (early August). There are so many hot, young Japanese chicks wearing the most insane bikinis. I constantly had to drape the towel over my trunks (if you know what i mean). This place goes off - night clubbing, onsen (outdoor public jacazzi), beach scene, etc. Fortunately for me, I got a good swell - head high plus. The waves were all right, but nothing to travel for.
