just spent some time in sumba and did go to nihiwatu,besides the politics of claude and co,the wave is too good not to sample.insane.

Check out the shady characters on Sumba Foundation Board - and their "Economic Hit Man" profiles. Their foundation is clearly a land takeover attempt, probably involving questionable international financial transactions and corruption. Some wealthy people are scratching each others' backs on these dealings. By the way, I don't think Indonesia has an extradition treaty with the western countries . . .

Some heavy stuff about Nihiwatu Resort. Pak Aldo's post can't be good for public relations. I would have to agree with the boycot suggestion. Not that I'd use these booking companies anyway. Having exclusive surfing rights at Nihiwatu sets a dangerous precident in Indonesia. Mr. Graves would have the public think that he is Mother Theresa.

its not tavarua or something this wave is off the coast...
imagine they did this at ulu and or padang heads would roll...maybe its that time boys!

I hope that is not true that Bapak Metebulo was assassinated. I stayed in his village 5 years ago, and managed to surf Nihinwatu, with some people who stayed at the resort and didn't mind that we surfed with them....But didn't meet that mister Claude....

I have lived in sumba off an on for ten years. Let this be known: Claude Graves, the owner of the resort an Nihiwatu (who forbids anyone except his guests to have access to the wave or the beach) is a thug. In his quest to maintain his monopoly on tourism in the name of cultural conservancy, he has created a situation which has become so volatile, it has led to much violence...including the murder of the village chief of Watukerere, Pak Metebulo....who had been feuding with Claude for years just because Claude refused locals for running their own guest houses. You will see that none of the locals are sympathetic to Claude, including his workers. Bring a gun (and i don't mean your board) and join the war....find him in Bali where he also lives and burn down his house like he has done to locals squatting on his land.
