By Boat only. There are boats to the Mentawai Islands from Padang's Batang Arau harbor four times a week. PT Rusco Lines (#21941). Jalan Batang Arau 31, has boats from Padang to Muarasiberut on Monday and Wednesday, returning on Tuesday and Thursday. The fares are 19 000/ 25 000 rp for deck/ cabin class. Boats leave at 7pm and the journey takes about 10-12 hours. Guides can also be hired for around $150US for 10 days (includes food, accom., and transport), this can be arranged in the town of Bukittinggi through coffe shops. For the rich, luxury boats can be chartered through American and Australian companys at around $150US a day. |
