Ntlonyane Access
The wave is amazing, one of the most consistant waves along this stretch of coast. It breaks along a sand bank that forms just of a point break and ends in a bay.The wave us super shredable with barrel sections to it and long bashable walls.Only problem is the resident great white sharks who have claimed several lives over the last few years.A real and menacing threat! Do not surf when the water is dirty. this makes the risk / reward factor is even! You need a 4 x 4 vehicle to get there & a local who knows the dirt roads well! Which means you need plenty of time.Note that is you should injure yourself a decent hospital is a good half day drive. the rainly season makes the roads impossible!

I recon this is what surfings all about... the wilderness, sharks, no accom, no fucking cellphones, oh god please dont let them start a surf camp here. This place is one of the last unspoilt frontiers, lets keep it that way

A bit of history
Hi there. I have been going to Ntlonyane since I was a sperm cell, and still go at every given opportunity. My family has had a place there since 1907 (as my great great grandfather was the first person to ever build a cottage there). Regarding sharks, there have to date been 3 (not severeal) shark attacks, only on surfers. The first was in 1981, where a great white attacked a surfer who lost his leg, but survived. In 1982, Alex Macun was attacked by a Zambezi (although he was surfing in the far bay on the Haven side which very rarely has good waves and is very deep). The last attacked happened in 1997, where Mark Penches (Australian) was attacked by a Tiger shark. All 3 attacks happened in July, which is unfortunately also the best time to surf. It's also the time when the sardine run comes past, hence the sharks. There is no accommodation at Ntlonyane, and camping is prohibited as it is in a nature reserve. Some people manage to organise accomodation with one or two of the cottage owners. The Haven Hotel is an hours drive through the forest, and the road through the forest is good. If you have a 4x4, you shouldn't have a problem getting there in any season, as long as you're willing to have a little fun when it rains :). To the person who believes it doesn't exist, I like people like you! Keep the stories going, the fewer people that come, the more quaint it remains. To the who do, respect the beauty and peace of what we have here in SA.
