Additional Surfing Infos
There is a little concrete walkway heading out into the surf to the right of the car park, which saves your feet from the urchins, but on bigger days the rip just keeps you paddling. Alternately you could paddle out from the right of the break and come around from the back. But time it right because getting caught inside at Nahoon will give you an experience you will be telling your Grandchildren about. Be warned, this spot is seriously sharks, surfers get attacked every year.
  Overview
Atmosphere There is a mellow vibe at Nahoon, the crowds start to thin out when it gets big. If you have a good attitude so will others in the water. Everybody is more concerned about the Great White swimming around than they are about where you are from.
General They used to hold the Gunston 500 there, but due to a good publicity stunt it was moved to Durban. Some travelling Hawaiian pro's described Nahoon as the closest wave to Sunset Beach outside of Hawaii.

Local is Lekker...
I was born & raised in "Slummies" now living in Kiwi land. I loved it, did all the local scenes, being an early 80's teen was at Numbers the first night it opened (years later and my kids were now frequenting the place, WEIRD). My mates & I would hitch down to Nahoon Reef (difficult with boards but we made it). Everyone knows the LONGEST road in EL to walk down... worse in the summer. I remember the last Gunston 500 held at Nahoon, I was stoked, world class surfing on our doorstep... the memory will live on in my mind forever. I absolutely lived for the surf, we all had long sleeve shirts those days with "Nahoon Reef" printed down the side of the arm, anyone remember that? On one occasion there was a bit of a commotion on the beach and wondered what the hell was going on, turned out Shaun Thompson was surfing and everyone had to get out of the water... those of us who frequented the surf in the 80's had the honour & privilege of seeing both Shaun Thompson & Wendy Botha in action, world class surfers (yeah, they were arrogant those days, but thinking back now they earned that right!). Years later and EL has another world class surfer Greg Emslie. It appears local is lekker afterall. EL is world famous for it’s sharks as well… Who can ever forget Shannon Ainslie – attacked by two great whites, footage shown on BBC, CNN, Discovery channel & even Ripleys Believe It Or Not (I think it’s in the surfers bible as well?). How I long for and miss Slum Town and the surf, as do my boys and we will return, even if only for a visit :o)

that's the stuff !!!
that's the place to go! roger and the dawnpatrol crew teached me how to surf proper waves! i met some of the most friendliest guys in the line-up,i.e. localism is inexistent, they'd rather cheer you into waves! surfers heaven compared to the crappy and over-crowded spots in europe! i'll be back definately!

Great wave!
I surfed Nahoon Reef with Dawn Patrol, as well as Igoda, Gonubie, Queensbury, Yellows, and a few others. Nahoon was a sweet, punchy wave! Roger at Dawn Patrol was invaluable in showing the ins and outs of getting through the reef and positioning up for the wave. I was a little sketched about the sharks but we didn't have any issues. I'll be back!! It's worth it!
