At 4-6 ft offshore & low tide You will get barreled for 50 metres on good waves...kirra does not break anymore, I reckon this is the best sand bank barrel in the world!

Missing OUT Surfers out there - what is all the fuss about the New Pier - i have not surfed there on a constant basis for over five years - been in Iraq and now working in Qatar - you guys who do get to surf it regulary should just be stoked - you go away for as long as i have been and things do change when one is back home - never the less respect the Locals and just enjoy the ocean - you drop in you must take what is going to come to you - you paddle on the inside, take what is due to you - remember " cowboys dont cry in fron of there horses "MOUSE - NEW PIER LOCAL - now visiting HAWAII

jop Its a great spot. i surfed it not that often but it works mostly every day! waves are often good quality. top spot and easy access, but, as the others said, crowded. hadnt any problems while surfing new pier! so be friendly and you wont have problems.

I'm a twenty year old guy and have been surfing for 8 months. The only three spots I have ever surfed are New Pier, Bay of Plenty and somewhere on the Bluff.I basically learnt to surf at New Pier and have been down there whenever the forcasts looked good or town surfers have told me it's going to be good. The lineup is usually full of older longboarders (weekdays) who might swear at you (even if you're an eleven year old girl) now and then, but when the wave does get a little bigger they clear off and you can catch some hollow waves directly in front of the pier.New pier is frustrating because the power of southerly swells is dissapated wrapping around a frikkin long harbour entrance. Generally one has to wait for uncommon east swells with long wave periods.Over the last 8 months, I have never seen the spot break like those photos (size wise). As a begginer new pier has never been beyond me and never broken my board. Bay is a little more powerful, but erratic and the Bluff... Well I got punished...

Old School I use to live in town, but moved down the coast when I got a chance. New Pier is a fun wave at any size. The only down side is the crowds and the atmosphere, I surfed from when they started building it in the late 80's, and it has changed a bit. It use to be one of those spots that had a good established hierarchy, and you earned your way from being a grom, expecting scraps to calling waves out the back. It is now a bit of a circus, people dropping in on each other, begginers calling the odds out the back, punchs being thrown. A bit of a shame really! I still happily ride it when it is is 6ft plus on low tide! Respect sets back in then! I have a number of friends of 15yrs who still ride it and it is great to see them when its on!

Warning to Lids??!!! - Wesley Ward Warning Me and my pals have been ripping big waves in Durban as well as the North Shore, Cave and many other heavy breaks on bodyboards for about tweny years. Wesley Ward we have been out at New Pier when it is 10-12ft with only Twiggy, Flame and a few other stand ups - not you. For a little twirp like you to warn us not to come to New Pier is a joke. When are you visiting Durban again? We want to chat with you about your out dated views!
