Additional Surfing Infos
The wave is really a world class beach break with a few rocks, most mornings it is firing, as soon as it is 4ft solid and up it is epic! The swells hit it from very deep water and nearly double in size as they jack up. It breaks pretty far out off a a semi reef/sand bar and then run through to the inside pretty quickly. On high tide you take off and hit it hard all the way through. On low tide you get barrelled on the outside with another barrel on the inside and a speedy manouvre section through the middle. It can hold a big swell, but there is no channel so you have to be in top shape to get out. Looks like Sunset from 8 feet up - you need a big board.
  Overview
Atmosphere There is lots of mutual respect between the guys who surf it. The most I have seen is about ten guys out. If you can figure out where it is and how to access the beach, show respect, you should not have any hassles.
General If you can find it, head there early in the morning, winter is the best and surf your brains out. Take a friend with, it could be that you are out by yourself in which case you need to realise that there is no help if you encounter problems.

1996 Session
I surfed Crossways a few tmes in the mid to late 90's. I remember one session that really stands out. It was in 1996 and winter. I drove down to Ansteys and there was an 8-10 ft ground swell pumping with a soft offshore breeze and it was low tide. There was no one ut at Ansteys and I do not think that it would of been possible to paddle out. We drove to Crossways and it was just absolute perfection. 200 metre rides but a tough paddle.

crossways untruths
I know a handful of bluff surfers who could claim to have surfed crossways as much as myself ( bar the last 3 years ) and I feel I must correct some statements regarding the wave to prevent disappointment. Nearby Ansteys and Cave Rock are undoubtably finer surfing breaks and to award crossways 4 stars is entirely misleading. Often, even with a substantial groundswell the wave barely exists at high tide and can only really be regarded as good over the full low. Sympathy to whoever sent in the original description as it certainly has its days but I feel the break wouldnt warrant a major search when there are better, more accessible breaks in the area. The break does not have shark nets and I have witnessed medium to large zambezi, dusky and hammerhead sharks in the lineup over a period of 15 years. If this is not a deterrant please respect the locals who choose this spot to avoid the aggressive ratpacks of durbans beaches.
