Nice beach, Nice Break
Good beginner breaks, with intermediate breaks in the story season. Not too many meatheads.
Surfed for two years, and now I'm back in Canada. I miss it!! (although there are many other, more wicked breaks in that general vicinity)

Big Bay gets Big
I've seen Big Bay swell up to 10-12ft face in stormy conditions - great to go out then as hardly anyone dares it into the waters.

Wave gets tremendously crowded with kiteboarders and windsurfers (mostly from europe) when the wind's up around February.

good option when all else fails
On rare occasions Big Bay works very well, but mostly its closing out. It's a good place for beginners, as the bay offers the illusion of safety, and there's an easy paddle out if you stick to the extreme left (as you face the water). Its overcrowded and overdeveloped, you'd be better off trying to make some surfing friends to show you the better spots in the area.

Having said all that, I've had some good surfs there, usually when there's been a big storm, and all the open ocean spots are a seething mess.

There never used to be such bad vibes in the water 10 years back. It seems the ous that have only been surfing the last few years are the ones who rate themselves and hassle for waves. Leave your sour bek at home.

Very Sad Saffa
It is so easy to see, what sad cases we South Africans are, not one Saffa (apart from a few) has a good thing to say about our surf spots on this site, all you saffa surfers do is take the piss out of your own surf spots off and each others comments,
It seems like the only people with good comments are the foreigners who visit our shores to enjoy what we take for granted everyday.

What a bunch of pessimistic wombats you guys are.

Wheres your ous sense of pride? If South Africa is such a shit hole and the waves are all kak, then why you all still here?

Visiting Cape Town
I usually surf 3-5 foot waves on my 9' long board in Santa Cruz, California. I will be traveling to Capetown in August and would like to surf there for at least one day. Can any of you nice gentlemen give me some advice?
1.Should I bring my wetsuit and booties or can I rent them on the beach?
2. I prefer a reef break. Are there any close by?
3. Is the area sharky?
4. Is there somewhere near the beach to rent a long board?

Crowds...
Lefts or rights are plenty if you can manage to get a wave inbetween the crowds. Lots of inexperienced surfers and a Surf school are part of the crowds especially between Nov-Feb.Best time of the day is early morning or late afternoon. Water can be freezzing but the view of Table Mountain and Roben Island makes it worthwile. If its 3ft and up I d consider to get wet.

Bay Rat's Reunion
Hey I grew up surfing the bay and have had a few good surfs there in my childhood,not to mention the left at Kamers.There's not a bad wave behind the rocks at the back of small bay too if you have the balls to surf it.
Any Bay Rat's out there still?Hope your alive and well!!
