Libya lefts - In the commments I made on Libya I said the sweel moves down from the north west so you need to find a point that catches an easterly swell. My mistake! ... I obviously meant a westerly swell
By Anonymous , 16-10-2010
Go left young man/woman - The swell in the Mediterrean is generated by winds patterns forming in the North West corner of the sea so the swell moves across this vast lake of water from the west towards the east. These weather patterns are fairly consistent during autumn, winter and spring so there is usually swell of some kind during these seasons. If you can find a sheltered point that allows an easterly swell to wrap around it you can most likely find a wave. The nearest left hand point break to Tripoli (the capital) is at the entrance to the old Roman harbour at Leptis Magna. It is about a two hour car drive from Tripoli. Surf trips can be very challenging here because of the madness on Libyan roads. In one year while I was living in there 3200 people were killed in car accidents. That is deaths at the site. It does not include people who died after being taken to hospital. Also ... because of the short reach, swell builds and falls quickly, so you need to be on it when it happens. You can get very good Med wave forecasts from the internet. Happy (and safe) wave hunting
