Trip: Anglet, France - 40th Anniversary
Saturday June 14 2014 06:36:43 PM
Date: from Jun 19, 2014 to Jul 2, 2014
Surf trip description:
In 1974 at the age of 20 four fullgrown landlubbers drove down to s/w France on a VW Bug with 34HP. It took us two days to make the 1500kms from Germany to the Basque County.
This trip changed my life completely!
So, 40 years (and over 100 visits) later and at the age of 60 it took us 16 hours to get to Anglet, the town of our first stay in '74. The "Camping Chambre D'Amour" where we rose our tent in the 70's+80's had to disapear for modern appartements and the sandy place behind the "Marinella" beach on which the stood with our VW is now occupied by beachclubs and restaurants. The jettys in the break weren't existing and the sandbars moved around with the tides and ripping currents were very common. Nearby every day a bloody tourist was pulled out and the beachguards had plenty of work. On good days we could count not more than a handful surfers catching waves on 8-10ft boards - holy shit!
On the anniversary trip we reached the aire camping car at the "Plage des Corsaires" shortly after high noon, the sea was calm with a couple of inches swell. Hoping for higher waves we looked at the forecast - shocking! No glimpse of a rideable swell for the next days. This conditions settled down for 10 days, and for the last two days of the trip it was a bit more but next to nothing.
After all this jubilee ended up in countless glasses of red wine and romantic sundowns.
