Date: from Jun 24, 2005 to Jul 2, 2005
Surf trip description:
The trip started out with the camel ferral stoned again after his morning hit from the bong. He hadnt packed his stuff yet, and still needed to cover his boards in bubble wrap for the inevitable mishandling of the twats at cheap flight baggage handling.
I was up, packed, organised, full of hidden promise and a twitch in my legs that was half excitment and half nervousness. My nerves had developed from my wondering mind. Two types of apprehension. The first was the ones I liked - Excited, energy nerves of the thought of the waves and adventures we were going to encounter and whether our swell chart and forecasting skills were going to reward us. The 2nd nerve types were my growing concerns that camel ferral was going to make us miss our flight through his slackness, and then get caught by the pleasant guys in custom and excise for trying to smuggle some smoko onto the plane.
We missed the flight. We also had to park in the airport carpark as we were too late to get to a friends to park. Expensive. We arrived in Spain with a hire car waiting. Now it was my turn to fuck-up. I'd only taken half the UK driving licence (why is it in 2!!) And for some reason stoney had his complete in his wallet. It cost a bit more, and he was grumpy cos it meant he had to drive and I could drink to my hearts content! Karma hehehe. We then headed to the city for food supplies. Filled the car with cheap wine, bread, cheese, water, strange spanish cakes, and the brightest fruit and veg Id ever seen. The ferral got some sausages for the bbq and I went for some local fish.
We made it to the coast and found a cool skate bowl with a good crew thrashing. We parked, sat, drank and ate. The smell of hash wafted over and ferral camel went to investigate. We chatted and toked with some locals, then found a place to crash.
First stop on the map and wannasurf trail, was Sopelana. A few campers in the park, a few more in the water. The standard looked pretty good and I hoped I could hold my own in the stronger, unknown waters. We looked left and saw a seperate beach with less people and a bigger peak. Ferral took out his new gun, and I went with my 6'8 that Id shaped myself. Its more a funboard than a gun, but has the volume and stability I feel confident with in bigger waves. My standard of surfing was mediocre. Camel ferral is a better surfer than myself, but I had the 'go for it' factor that he lacks in bigger waves. I took the drop on a left, grabbed the rail and flew across the face, watching the lip suck up, I pulled out after a short sweet first ride in the Basque waters.
We headed up the coast (to be continued)
