Surf trip description:
When I first went on this trip, I didn't really know what to expect. All I knew was we were going to the Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and possibly even the Texas coast. Since I was only 16 at the time, my dad welcomed the idea that we go along the coast to sample everything it had to offer. Now, my parents own 2 houses: one in Malibu, California and another sorta in Atlanta, Georgia. Because of the cheaper way of living in Atlanta, I stay here during the school year.
So, it was Friday on November 16, when my dad and I drove down from Atlanta. We crossed through Birmingham, Alabama, and ended up in Mobile down on the shores. It was long into the night before we settled in Dauphin Island. The hotel we stayed in had a nice tropical vibe to it. I opened the window and listened to the waves crash down before I went to sleep.
The next morning, I was so excited to get out there that I almost forgot where I was. My dad insisted I eat something before so I did. I ran out to the sand-drenched parking lot and grabbed my shortboard. Although it was late November, the heat was kicking at past 80 degrees. I practically burned my feet running down to the water. The first couple of breaks were duds but it began picking up. Right around noon, I was wiped out already. It's nothing that a frosty soda can't fix though. The waves were changing every so often. By the time mid tide rolled in, the waves were at their peak of the day. Some other college vacationers came in and were playing football on the beach. As I caught some waves, they cheered me on a couple times. High tide was in and the surf was dead. I felt like that was it for the day since the waves were no longer high enough, they broke right on the sand, and the heat was getting fierce. For spending a whole day out there, I felt like this was going to be a great week.
