Surf trip description:
I was living in Huntington Beach at this time, surfing the pier each day. My best friend, Steve Wheat, asked me to go to a surf trip to Mazatlan, Mexico. His dad had rented a condo there and we would join him. It sounded great to me, so off we went, driving his VW Squareback from HB, CAlif, to Arizona, crossing the boarder there. We then drove straight down to Mazatlan. Mazatlan has mostly left breaks, such as Cannon's Point, which has sea urchins on all the reef below the waves. We also surfed Lopez Point and many other Mazatlan breaks. We saw many large Iguana's running around the caves, near the beach.
From Mazatlan, we drove to San Blas, surfed small Manachen Bay, which supposedly has the longest wave in the world, and while at San Blas, found some hot and cold springs to enjoy, after surfing, as well.
From the San Blas area, we went to Guadalahara, sight seeing then on to Puerto Vallarta. We stayed the night on the beach, slipping into beach chairs at a fancy hotel and staying there, for FREE. We then drove back up the coast to Punta Mita, and found a family living in a VW Van!! We also found some native Mexicans hollowing out trees to make a boat, too!!
We surfed that area for a few glassy days, then drove back to Mazatlan, meeting up again with Steve's dad, then driving back to HB!!
What a neat surf trip.
