Don't let the beauty of the place fool you. I had the worst "localism" experience of my 25 years of surfing all over the world, including Hawaii and The Ranch. There are some serious criminal low lifes who live near Mesa Lane, SB. Twenty years ago they stole my roommates classic car, in perfect condition, and joy rode it up in the mountains damaging a perfect car that was irreplacable. Or course, the police were clueless and didn't want to fingerprint the car or ask around the neighborhood if anyone saw anything. What is it about the Mesa? Do the people in breed there? I lived there. I was their neighbor and they did this to me. It is one beautiful place with some serioulsy ugly people.

Perfect, glassy waves. About 5ft, South/Southwest swell, with a north wind. With theses conditions it makes for a pretty good spot. We were on a road trip and we just stopped and surfed for a couple hours.

Thought I missed my opportunity for a barrel when I pulled in the first time and saw the light of day only to have some back wash pitch me up into the roof. Paddled back out and the 2nd wave was everything the 1st was but with an exit. I claimed that B and I've had a smile on my face ever since.

Small in between sets, with 3-4ft sets. One 5 or 6ft set came though and cleaned up all the longboarders(one old local guy was going leashless. He had to swim all the way back in to retrieve his board after bailing to go under the set)
Fun day with friends, quite sunny. Waves were closing out at times, but still fun.

Nevermind, I got fun waves to surf!

Semi-crowded, super low tide and small waves when we arrived, tide and waves came up later. Nearly flat in between sets with waist-high sets.
Biggest wave of the session was about head-high... I tried to catch it and it chucked me off the lip onto the water 5 feet below... A bit painful(bodyboard bellyflop!) but it kept going and carried me all the way to shore(from the outside).
Tried skim boarding for the first time... Epic fail. A few butt-slides and knee scrapes later, I decided that skim boarding just isn't my thing...
4 and a half hours later, sunburned, bruised, and scraped, I headed home.

I was always at the same sandbank but at lower tide. The swell was rising. I got powerful waves(less than 2m) pretty long. No tubes but long walls and big turns !

Martianez is also a safe beach but very small. Don't know if it gets better with more swell but this particular day it was not worth to get wet.

First time out at Tenerife. The spot is the nearest surfable wave from our appartement, so it was obvious to check there first. What we saw was not funny: The heavy rainfall during February 2010 had loosen big rocks from the cliff and danger of landslide disposed the municipal authority to close the beach to public. Anyway, all fishers and surfers climbed around the fence and went down surfing, so I did the same.

Head high sets, with the occasional 8 footer coming through on the outside.

Best session at Manly. Wind finally turned off shore and the whole cove glassed off. Best part is no one was out. I guess it was the start of Oz football or something like that.

Windy onshore conditions bumped everything up and brought in the purple people eaters. More annoying than anything else. The blue bottles on the other hand left a scar on my wrest for a week.

The surf was bad in the am but turned out to be nice in the afternoon. Locals were friendly, but water was freezing. We left early and then talked to some surfers who said it turned out nice later. We went to gulfster.com to look at pics of what we missed. We should have stayed. Oh well its part of the adventure.

Wasn't perfect for Rodiles and bit of a crowd gathered (from 5 when I paddled out to 10 after a bit)... but after half a year of beach break I got the two best lefts of my life. At first had to wait for leftovers... then it got super consistent and pulled a conveyor belt move where all ten were either paddling or on a wave for my last three waves. I've been pretty ill and shouldnt have surfed at all, so this wore me out quick. Head high, slightly overhead sets...

It's one of my best session ever ! The sandbank was just perfect and the waves were rippable. With the tide, the waves were surprisingly getting better and better: at the end each wave was tubular and easy to catch. As they was absolutely no current, it was easy to surf.
I got several tube with a long one.

Couldn't ask for much more in a beginner trip that I'd been dreaming of for 20+ years. Maybe just more waterproof sunscreen for my schnaz!
Size and shape of waves at Dominicalito (about 10 minutes south of the main beach) is more suitable for beginners. There were two other good, gentle spots we surfed over the 14 day trip, too, but their names escape me now...
Take stingray warnings seriously. One instructor got stung 'cause he doesn't bother with "the shuffle". Though it was his first sting in 12 years and it didn't slow him down much, some people have much more of a reaction; it was a pretty nasty wound with plenty of bleeding.
Watch out for floating logs, too. They hurt when you slam into 'em!
