Caught a few decent waves early in the session.  Got tired quickly due to wind.

Pretty crowded for a March afternoon,  a lot of young guys on longboards which

surprised me.  Expected more shortboards with the wind as strong as it was.

Real pretty waves.  Good to be out.

Description:

Things started out pretty normally. Got there around 5pm. The sun was strong and the waves were large (5-8 foot). There were about 8 people out on the southern break, but they were a bit spread out.

The tide was decently high. The waves were breaking hard on the beach and cement walls. I did some stretching and headed in. My first wave wasn't too bad, I got up on my feet and tried to turn to the right (frontside) but sort of lost the wave. After that I went through a rough series of wipe outs where I was trying to get my feet and body weight positioned correctly on the board for doing a frontside turn and surfing to the right. This included some seriously thrashing face plants and falls onto my back right into the breaking waves.

The waves were quite large, the biggest I've been successful in on a longboard to this point. But I seemed to be catching them just in the right spot and avoided getting slammed by the large sets (6-9 waves in a row). Most of the time I was able to turn to the right slightly, so while it wasn't anything great, it at least got me a little closer to escaping the impact zone before the next wave hit.

Then as twilight set in and the sunset ended, I caught a good wave. I was able to do a frontside turn and keep on the wave, then follow it up by straightening out a little before the wave backed off. It was about a 10s ride, nothing great, but one of the best of the day. I thought about calling it a night and heading in. I was already close to the shore and it would be a long paddle back out.

I decided to push my luck and paddled all the way back out. I rested a minute, then paddled for a wave. Just before I caught it, someone else got it and I had to give way. This left me a good ways back in towards the shore. I had to quickly paddle back out if I was going to catch a wave before all the twilight was gone.

I setup for a wave thinking that it would be the last of the night. I caught it and jumped to my feet in good position. I quickly did a frontside turn (to the right). Then I realized that the wave was dying off, so I did a cutback to the left and rode the wave back that way until I get near the whitewater. I couldn't believe that I hadn't fallen yet (15s). I tried to do another cutback and head to the right again, but my board just wouldn't turn. I managed to straighten out but I wasn't going to the right. So I had the thought (finally) to turn my hips, so I swiveled my hips and head out towards the open ocean. It was kind of crazy because I couldn't see where I was going at all. But it worked! A few seconds later I was still on the wave and heading to the right. I rode it to the right a bit more and then straightened out some. I noticed that I was getting in close to some shallow water and rocks, so I dropped down onto the board on my chest. Then I grabbed the front of the board and I rode it the rest of the way (40m) back into the shore!

I couldn't believe it! I had stayed up the whole way, in big waves, and I had done turns and cutbacks that I'd never been able to do well before! The whole ride was about 100m and a good 25s standing and another 15s on my stomach.

Best day of surfing in my life! Unfortunately this was my last day of surfing this summer. But what a way to end it! I can't wait to get back to the beach next summer and do this again! Hopefully I can ditch this longboard and get a shortboard next summer too!

Description:

Got the car out of the shop and raced down to San Bartolo to get in a little surfing.  Made it by 6pm before the sunset.  Had to get out just before 7pm though as twilight is ending much earlier now.

Went out to the southern break and tried to catch the rights.  First wave I was up and riding and almost turned to the right (still need a lot of practice on that).  After that it seemed like my wax job got the best of me.  I didn't wax the board because I was in a hurry and figured it was good enough.  The rest of the night I mostly ended up slipping and falling off due to lack of grip (and a little exhaustion).

I was going for most every wave I could because I knew I had limited time.  I certainly got plenty of exercise as I was huffing and puffing most of the session.  After I got really tired, there was no time to rest, so I just kept catching waves... but then wiping out.  I must have caught at least 10 waves where I wiped out in only 5s or so.

Not sure if it's the surf booties or what, but something was really killing the side of my left pinky the whole session.  Not sure if they were rubbing on a bug bite or if they were the cause of it.

Water wasn't too crowded, only about 6-8 people and there were more than enough waves.

Description:

Wicked morning session on the board I have dubbed the "tank". Awesome break with a lot of good waves, managed to snag my share of decent ones off the shoulder. I find it difficult to surf the main section just because of how heavy the shredder is to paddle back out, especially through the whitewater. Still, a fun time overall. Went back in the afternoon but the waves weren't as nice and I was a little tired from the morning session (only took a 2 hour break in between sessions), and I got fairly well worked by one particular 6ft set that I missed the first one of then got swamped by the second and third... these shredder boards are hell if you get caught in the wrong spot on anything breaking head high because theyre so dodgy to maneuvre... all in all though this was a pretty decent day, especially in the am. That North swell gave us some sweet sets.

Description:

Nice waves following on from the North Swel we have been experiencing. Would have liked to have surfed more but this darn shredder I'm surfing is a brick in the water after a while. It also rips the knees to shreds so after a while the quick-turns are hard to control cuz the grip area is raw as a mother........ All in all though the waves were beauty. Lotta people out but that wasn't an issue, had a few great rides, a few shit rides, and a couple meh rides...

When I can afford a proper board things will be much more fun... until then gottah do what ya can do. Definately going to try for a full day tomorrow, waves should be just as good.

Peace

Description:

How does a broken pinkie feel in 54F water after 2 hours ... nurse, nurse it hurts! Not a cloud in the sky, warm spring sunshine, light offshore Santa Ana's but only a small mix of NW windswell and SW groundswell combined with an 8AM, 5 feet 6 inch high tide. Local breaks were swamped ... welcome to Lake Mead. My mate and I parked his massive 8.1 liter V8 Chevy Silverado 2500 Crew Cab Long Bed Pickup ... loaded up my Solara and blasted down PCH to Newport Beach ... we had heard that Blackie's had been good on the high tide the previous morning. Yup it was waist to chest high, with soft fun peaks but CROWDED. What a zoo ... kids, girls and old guys. Got some nice lefts before the cold water really got to my broken finger. Cost my buddy a $38 parking ticket ... one of those tricky signs that gets everyone ... you know ... no parking between X and Y on the third full moon of each month!

Rainbow Bridge:

Follow up: Blackies has been good every morning this week while other spots have been junk.  Yesterday we had a waist to chest high mix of short period wind swell with sneaker shoulder high sets. This morning was the same but more crowded due to the Easter weekend. Unusual weather phenom also ... we had some dense fog roll in and as the morning sun burnt if off we had a beautiful thick rainbow (fogbow) from the line-up to the rock groin!

Description:

Holy Week holidays make almost the whole week, just like a Sunday.  This means that the beaches are overcrowded and the surf is almost unsafe due to so many young kids and other surfers.  I went down to San Bartolo for one of my normal weekday sessions, no big deal... the place was packed.  There was a 'parking full' sign at the entrance, but they still let me in.

There were cars parked in almost every open spot along the road and there was only room for 1 way traffic.  Amazingly due to it being late afternoon, I did find myself a good parking spot.  Farther than usual, but not bad at all.  The whole afternoon the southern wave had about 20-30 people on it (more than I'd ever seen before).  It seemed like it would get overcrowded at around 30 and people would start talking about going to Santa Rosa/Maria or they would swim across to the central wave.  This repeated most of the afternoon as only a few people actually stayed at this wave (including me).

The waves were pretty nice 5-6 footers and there was a much larger wait between sets than normal.  This meant a lot more time to rest and look at the scenery, which caused a lot of people to leave because they got bored.  But the water was great, this was the first afternoon in weeks that I'd been here w/o a strong onshore wind causing everything to get bumpy and choppy as hell.  Today it was smooth and really enjoyable.

I caught a bunch of the rights trying to work on some frontside surfing.  But I had practiced backside so much already that the few waves that I really caught well, I ended up going backside.  I'm still not really getting the hip rotation part of the turn down well.  I can tilt the board and put weight on my back foot just fine though.  I also need to work on re-transfering that weight back to the center after I turn.  Glad I had plenty of time in the water, it allowed me to work on some stuff even though I spent most of the day dodging people who had already caught the wave.

There was one small kid that seemed to be the worst of them all.  He was a nice guy, but he would paddling and try to catch almost every wave.  But he only really caught about 10% of them.  This sucked because I would always give way to him and then he wouldn't catch the wave.  But in Peru this respect and right of way seems to be forgein to most people.  I guess I need to get used to that.  I just don't want any mid-air body-to-body collisions.

Description:

I got down there after work for a good surf session.  I was expecting a fairly small mid-week crowd.  I was very surprised when I arrived to find about 10-15 people getting out of the water and by the time I paddled out there were still a good 20+ people in the southern break and a good 10-15 people in the middle break.  I don't go on Sundays due to the crowding, but this seemed just like a Sunday.

I'm not sure if it was due to Holy Week starting or what.  The gov't holidays don't start until Thursday.

Anyhow, the onshore wind was pretty solid and there was a ton of chop in the water.  The waves were good size, about the max I can really make any progress on.  I was trying to get some practice with turning.  I did get my tip to come back up out of the water and almost get it to turn, but normally I would wipe out shortly there after.  Generally I was getting too far out ahead of the wave before I could do the turn move.  So by the time I was turned, the wave was just catching back up with me and knocking me over.

Looks like I need to work more on catching the wave before it breaks and then standing up right as I catch it, rather than a couple seconds after I make 'sure' that I've caught it.  This should let me get the turn going while still on the wave face.

I had limited time to be in the water and was constantly dodging other surfers.  There were almost non-stop waves, so most everyone got their share.  But there was a lot of giving way that was needed by everyone, along with a lot of dodging people who were riding the wave (and thus getting yourself thrashed).  I wish summer wasn't over so that I could keep advancing my skills enough to ride a shortboard and get out of beginner areas.

Description:

Conditions were perfect and clean when we arrived at 8:30am.  After an hour in the water, everything changed and the onshore winds were making conditions extremely choppy.  Sunny all morning.

I met a nice girl out in the waves who encouraged me to keep my feet up and crossed when paddling.  So I spent a lot of time working on that (balance).  I caught a couple waves that were decent.  I was pretty impatient and paddled for numerous waves that were too small to catch, then got pushed in by the rest of the set.  This lead to long paddles back out to the lineup.

Overall a pretty average day.  My mother in law came down this day to enjoy the beach.  We both really enjoyed the Barena surf stop stand that's been there all summer.  They keep it clean.  There's racks for your board and always security nearby.

We get a really big tempest this week... so I didn't expected that there was waves today. But...this morning... sunny sky...long swell. I took my afternoon and went to Le Gurp. When I arrived, waves seemed small but I noticed TUBES !!! I just jumped into the water....

As usual at Le Gurp, waves were bigger than thought. It was a long hollow wall with some tubes. We were only 3 in the water. After I forced me to slow down while staying high on the face even if the wave was fast and hollow... and I caught the tube !

My second tube was different: I went straight pretty far the I turned while letting the wave coming other me, I put a top turn (the hard part) and the wave passed other myhead: it was a standup tube, I even watch the sun trough the lip other my head.

The images below don't show the good waves as I wanted to run to the water....

Description:

Woohoo!  One of my best days of surfing yet!  I was thinking of bodyboarding Playa Norte in Punta Hermosa, but it was flat.  La Isla didn't look too great either, so I was thinking it would be a down day.  I decided to check out San Bartolo, mostly just to see how it handled the smaller swell.

It was great!  The waves were perfect for a beginner like me! I would have liked the tide a little higher, but it was coming in and wasn't too bad.  I raced home to grab the board.

I got back and into the water as quickly as I could, knowing that I only had about 1.5 hours max before the end of twilight.  There were a good deal of people out in the water earlier, but by the time I got out there it was down to about 5 people in the lefts.  By the time I was done, it was just me and 2 others.

The waves were steady and exactly what I was looking for.  Single peak, ~4 footers.  I caught my first few waves and it really felt good.  Only 2 waves did I paddle for and not end up getting.  There were plenty of waves for me and the others.  I finished up with 2 of my most solid waves ever.

The first I was too far up on the board and it was a larger ~5 ft wave.  I did a push up on the board and slid myself back on the board, this kept me from pearling.  Then after I was on the wave I stood up and ended up pretty far back on the board, but OK.  I managed for my first time ever to adjust my front foot forward without wiping out.  When the wave caught back up with me, I was able to keep control and continue to ride it.  I made an attempt to turn to the left, but didn't really turn my hips.  So I finally went down off to the side of the board.

The second wave was a nice 4 footer and I caught it at an angle, really trying to ride down the wave and not shoot out like a missile.  I had a good angle on the wave and was up on my feet with no problems.  I managed to move the board around some without falling or loosing control.  I was able to see all the rocks under water as I flew by them.  It was great.  Again I was able to catch the wave and not fall down when it caught up to me.  Then I actually managed to turn and go to the left, just as the wave ended.  So it was my first real 'exit' of a wave on the surfboard!  I even managed to just drop down onto the board w/o wiping out!

What a great session!  Plus the sunset was simply beautiful.  This is the first day where I really felt like I was actually surfing!

Went down for a mid-morning session at San Bartolo.  Had planned on getting down there much earlier, but didn't wake up early enough.  By 10:30am when I got down there, there was a bit of wind and by the time I got in the water is was quite windy and choppy.

It was my first session back in the water after over a week of battling the flu.  The salt water helped clear out my sinuses real well.

Had a couple wipe outs as I figured out how to catch a wave again ;)  But at the end I caught a real nice ride where I almost managed to turn.  I rode it in most all of the way to the rocks and then headed in.

Nothing too special, but nice to be back in the water.  Though there was quite a bit of plastic and other trash in the water :(
