Description:
surprising nice waves considering I went in at 15h30, and it was starting to blow onshore. Big group of surfers up by the Baleal Spit, so I headed further south. There are many peaks along this beach so I got out where only two other guys were. No hassle for getting waves. After about 45 minutes a surf-school brought about 30+ to the same peak - so I drifted down to the next one and carried on surfing almost alone. Fun waves, ot powerful, not steep, but generally opened up right and sometimes left, giving easy conditions. Nice to feel that some of paddling on the lake these last few weeks has helped a bit with fitness ;-)

Description:
i went to maruata this weekend, cause i was in cuyutlan and the waves were way to big for me (10-15ft), so were to ticla and other places, and a friend of mine (shaper javier from cuyutlan) told me that maruata was a fun and small wave, perfect wave for longboard.
so we go there (whit shaper javier and two new friends from puerto rico who take there their shortboards and fishboards)
we first go to ticla and the waves were big and closed, so javier told us to go to maruata but even in maruata the wave was big (to big for the place as the locals told me) the wave was around 2 - 3.5 mts. (6-8 ft) and only a few waves was surfeable at all,, cause almost all waves was to closed.
anyway i manage to go inside an toke 2 waves (remember that am inly a begginer) and the other guys toke 6 .10 waves each some of those waves were really beautifull.
i dont think that am goingo to see maruata that big again. but im only a begginer so i could be wrong

I went with Chris at the spot. We expected a small 80cm but we found funny 1meter waves: small, hollow, tubular, warm water. Everything was here to have a good session. I met a lot of friends in the water (7). I got small tubes and one backside !
After 2 hours, we changed of spot and found a powerful low tide sand bank: more than 1.2m, nearly a hollow close out...
This session would have been "4 stars" but I had a dispute with a guy. It was a bit sad.

Description:
Welcome to Lake Mead:
No surf this past week so here is a blast from the past. I remember one of my early surf trips with Michael Eaves and Robbie Acton as if it were yesterday! An early summer dawn on a Wednesday in November 1967. Crescent Heads on the north east coast of New South Wales, Australia. The first rays of gold and red upon the ocean revealed perfect lines marching in around the point with sets from shoulder to a foot overhead, feathering in the light offshore breeze. Warm water, sand and a cobblestone bottom, lined the rocky headland ... no one out!
The Little Duce Coupe:
We had driven the several hundred miles, at a steady 90 MPH, boards strapped to the roof, south from Queensland on a Pacific Coast Highway strewn with 'dead man's curves' in Mike's Sunbeam Rapier (Michaels parents were wealthy Afrikaner ranchers who had fled to Australia from the Mau Mau uprising). We had seen some photos in an old Surfer Magazine of Midget Farrelly soul arching at Crescent, like Mickey Dora (my idol) at Malibu. We slept in the car at a campground by the creekmouth in the bay and instead of walking all the way around the point to get out we began the mile long paddle from shore.

Sunbeam Rapier - Sunbeam Alpine -Sunbeam Tiger:
The Sunbeam Rapier coupe was quite a classy car to own in Australia back in 1967 as was the Sunbeam Alpine which was driven by James Bond in Dr. NO and eventually became the Sunbeam Tiger, powered by a Ford V-8 and driven by Get Smart' s Agent 86. The Alpine had made its debut in 1953 and was a derivative of the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 sedan and drophead (convertible coupe), which featured a 2267cc 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed transmission with optional overdrive. This car had a remarkably successful rally career, including a 1953 overall victory in the famed Monte Carlo Rally.
An earlier version of the Alpine-Talbot, the Mk1 Drophead was used in the movie "To Catch a Thief" with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.
To Catch a Wave:
It was still dark as we reached the line up and the swells looked like giant, moving black hills. OK who is going to catch the first wave! Playing it safe (no leashes and a long swim) I took off on the shoulder ... perfect wave. After catching a few of the smaller waves Michael and I tookoff on a giant overhead peak ... hard off the bottom ... crouching through the bowl in front of the rocks then out onto the long glass wall ... we were climbing and dropping, but as the wave boomeranged into the bay (now called The Racetrack) it got steeper and steeper, faster and faster! I was inside and low, Michael was up high in front and the wake from his board made the wave start to peel over my head ... I crouched down and grabbed a rail ... I could see light in the tunnel ... for a couple of seconds but then I was in the washing machine and making the long swim to the creek mouth. ... he rode it all the way almost a mile!
Was a punk kid back then riding an 9'8" log. Would love to go back in time to surf those same waves today ... either lip smacking & tail sliding on my 7' 2" MR Twin Fin "SuperFish" or screaming down the line on my super light, super fast, flat bottom, down railed 9' 2" modern high performance John-Luc Robert's Longboard!

My wife and I just came back from a week in Kona and we had a blast at Lymans. It was our luck, but the SSW swell was running and we caught lefts all morning as they steadily built up in size. A few nice overheads to end the session. Went back two days later, hoping to hit Pine Trees as well, but no joy.
Only six others in the water, all locals, all cool. Thanks in particular to Deborah for showing us the ropes. The aloha spirit is alive and well on the Big Island. Can't wait to get back there again.

Over a couple of days worked on technique after lessons at Carcons. Nothing happened on the first day, but on the afternoon of the second day I decided to take out Zuma Jay, which I have never been able to ride as it was too small for my experience level. It is also not bouyant enough. I went out without a wetsuit and decided to go straight in for a wave, caught it and was up and riding. This was really the first time I have managed to do this and to do it on this board was amazing for me. Really happy.
The picture shows me a little unstable on the morning session with a larger board. No shots of the afternoon, but I was better - honestly ;)

I went with Wannaboy. We didn't surf together since one year at least! When we arrived, we were disappointed as the tide seem to be too high...We jumped into the water. We started to surf with fun but mellow waves.
The tide continued to rise and suddenly, for 30 min, it was heaven: a perfect right-left peak, hollow with tubes with only 4 surfers! I caugth a good tube but didn't find the exit. Wannaboy and me caught tons of waves !
After the time, the tide was getting lower and waves too. But it was still rippable until the end of the session.
I will remember this session as I was so happy to surf with Wannaboy: no question of work or website or anything else but surf !

The past few mornings of the dawn patrol at Seal Pier has been really fun, even though the waves have been small. Conditions have been great, no wind and a clean mix of NW and SW swells with a negative low tide.
Take off on the backside of the peak, then duck for a little cover up or a cheater five across the section, then nose ride the wall on the inside sandbar all the way into the shorebreak.

I cant wait until Friday!

Took my board down to the lake - actually not at this exact 'spot' but about 5km further up. Found an nice isolated place and paddelled out. I swam in the lake several days before and it was OK temperature - but now after a couple of days of rain it was pretty cold and I was glad to have my shorty wetsuit on.
Happilly no one saw this sad spectacle of a land-locked surfer paddling out. If I can get a bit fitter (or a bit less un-fit), and catch one or two extra waves when on vacation next month... then it will not have been so silly. Still, I did feel pretty stupid 'suiting up' next to a perfectly falt lake :-)

Today was our 1st anniversary, and Maggie and I went for a dip at Santa Clause just to get wet. The waves were small and all closed out. But Maggie was on LJ (little jew, 7.1 fun-shape), and I was on my shortboard. Session was short, and even with small waves we both got a little worked (thanks SC). But the noteable things that happened, I got my first two rides on a shortboard. Both were like one second long (SC being a shore break and all), but it's something. I'll have to go to sands and give it a try there more often now.

As Andri called it, our "surf family" went out again to campus again. Annie & Reid plus Maggie and Me. Jason was in the water when we got there, and Viral and Andri came out after we were in. At one point the lineup was Andri, Jason, Reid, me and three other shortboard kids. That was awesome. Annie bought our 9.2 Aloha from maggie today. Maggie is gonna ride her 7.1 'little jew' primarily now, which I am impressed with.
Today was my best surf day yet. I got a ton of rides, and many of them were not on ideal waves. A couple of them were over 30 seconds long. I felt like I had better control and handling than I've ever had.
When got home I stripped all the wax off my board and put a nice two coat over the entire top surface. Hopefully I can do some nose riding soon.

Annie & Reid joined Maggie and I for a session at Campus point. Maggie tried out our 'little jew' board, a 7.1 fun-shaped. She did really well on the board, even through it was so short. I am getting interested into shaping boards. I found kit I can purchase: $280 gets me all the materials for a 7.10 fun-shaped board (7.7 -8.0), and $60 gets me all the shaping tools (no power tools). Now If I could just get a surfboard shack...
Here is the site I found the blanks and tools: http://www.foamez.com/
