Surfing May Atlantic Coast / Latin America - 2013/04/08 22:45 Hi guys,

I'm living in Madrid at the moment but am heading home to work in Chicago this summer. On my way back I'd like to stop off and use the two or three free weeks I have to surf somewhere. I'm heading to Fuerteventura, Canary Islands this weekend. The time I'm looking to find a spot is from about May 5 - May 20. I've read that Costa Rica might be good, as well as Galicia here in Spain or some places in Portugal. I'm still a beginner but learning fast, having been thrown onto a short board for learning in Panama for 5 days last year. I surfed two days at El Palmar and Barbate here in Spain this year, and should add 3 more in Fuerteventura this weekend. Any suggestions on places with the best conditions in May? I'd prefer Latin America or a place on the Atlantic coast as it's on my way home.

Re:Surfing May Atlantic Coast / Latin America - 2013/04/10 18:28 Galica in may is ok. Water cold (as always) but powerful waves to break beginner-bones. And from there it's only 3.500 Miles more paddle to US East coast
Joking aside: Atlantic coast panamerica is not a good idea - no significant waves there during summer season!
Take a cheap flight from Madrid to East Coast US, Florida to New Jersey offers a bunch of surfable locations.

Re:Surfing May Atlantic Coast / Latin America - 2013/04/10 21:49 Surfing in Tortola BVI is best during the winter months but we occasionally have great waves here even after March. Just last week, March 30-April 4, we had Tortola Surf Classic surfing competition and we still had great waves. If you are going by boat, you might want to try the British Virgin Islands. Contact us at Island Surf and Sail if you do decide to pass by.

Re:Surfing May Atlantic Coast / Latin America - 2013/04/11 01:06 Sorry let me clarify: what about Pacific coast of Panama and CR? My friend from Panama (where I originally learned to surf) says the surf should be pumping quite well on the Pacific side in May. Looking at the swell stats it seems that all summer (northern hemisphere) the swell is pretty solid on the Pacific side. I actually don't have any intention of surfing the Caribbean side but meant "Atlantic coast" as far as Europe and Africa are concerned.

Re:Surfing May Atlantic Coast / Latin America - 2013/04/11 03:55 OK Tamarindo on the West Coast of Costa Rica has waves all year from beginner to expert. Search trips for: "All you want to know about Tamarindo". PS Costa Rica is quite expensive now days.
