Surfing from LA to San Diego - 2012/03/07 22:56 Hey,
I'm gonna be in California in June. Any hints for a relaxing beach with a good atmosphere for fairly beginners? I read that on some places foreigners are not really welcome. Somebody some expereience? Cool would also be if there are some nice places for going out in the evening and meeting some nice people.
Thanks in advance!

Re:Surfing from LA to San Diego - 2012/03/09 03:26 Any spot is mostly what you are looking for. If mellow & not intense is what you need, check Doheny Beach in Dana Point, San Onofre in upper north San Diego/Orange County line.Dana Point has a few places to go out around the harbor. Laguna is ok, but do not want to betray my brothers & give any locations except it is ok for walking around meeting people. Expensive though, not for a typical surfer's pocketbook. I do not know LA too well. San Diego co. has lots of spots, Moonlight Beach, Carlsbad state bch. Be ready for cool weather just in case, we can have "June Gloom" weather here, the water is still a bit chilly too, wetsuits needed.
Oh yeah..there is a spot called Windansea..............ouch!

Re:Surfing from LA to San Diego - 2012/03/16 00:45 Windasea? Got pounded out there, heavy break on a big day! Doheny and Old Mans San Onofre are good calls. For an adventure and less crowds, head north of Ventura on old Highway One. That being said I taught my daughters to surf at Surf City USA, yep northside Huntington Pier on the inside reform bank. The waves have plenty of power so are easy to catch, take off in the white water then learn to angle across the green peak into the shorebreak. You are usually not in any ones way as they are way outside, just dont drop in or you will get beat up LOL.

Re:Surfing from LA to San Diego - 2012/03/20 05:45 Thank you! Sounds like a good place for me

I guess it's best to rent a car to get to all these places?

Re:Surfing from LA to San Diego - 2012/05/15 23:43 Hey buddy,

you should definitely rent a car, it's the best way to get around in LA.

If you're a begginer and you will arrive in LA, you could try starting at the Venice Breakwater or Venice Pier... easy waves, easy paddle out, easy location.

Going down south I recommend you stop by Huntington... mostly because the city is awesome, but it's a tough crowd, everyone seems to be a pro.

After you get acquainted to the waves, you could try Trestles, in San Clemente. Uppers and Lowers are way too crowded, but I recommend surfing Cottons, to the far right. It's less crowded, and it's a great point break, perfect for improvers. easy paddle out, and the bottom is mostly sand... plus the rocks are round, it's really mellow. San O is right past it, it's a very mellow wave.

I don't know San Diego very well, but if it's not big, you could hit Blacks, the best beach break in California. if it's big, forget, it can get pretty heavy. there are many beach breaks in San Diego, take a look, and paddle out if it looks suitable for you.

If you're willing to drive a little bit up north of LA, there are a few great spots. Topanga is a Point break in north LA, and there's Ventura as well, a very mellow point break, I just can't remember the name of the street.
