Where to surf in the Big Island (Hawaii) in Novemb - 2012/09/07 08:14Hi Guys, I love hawaii and I am going back for 6th time in 10 years. This time I am going diving at the Big Island and would like to surf a bit too.
As it's going to be winter I know surf can get big on north shore and other spots. Could you please let me know a good longboard wave that won't be huge in the island in November? I have tons of respect for Hawaii culture and people, but know localism can be a problem. Let me know a place I can go, just be respectful and have fun.

Re:Where to surf in the Big Island (Hawaii) in Novemb - 2012/09/24 05:11Hi Skuba, I can tell you about a couple. The spot look up on this site is pretty good w/ alot of detail. Coming from experience, I can tell you what NOT to do on the Big Island.... avoid swells that are overhead and break on reef or lava. If the water is deep, that is one thing, if not, do not go there! A few spots I recommend for a longboard or learning areas..... Pine Trees, Kiholo Bay (you ususally have to walk in from the highway unless you know someone), Old Airport,Lymans (breaks left), spots on Kohala coast. This is a big island (hence the name!) and there are LOTS of places to explore and check out. If there are not enough spots listed here, get a report from Surfer magazine, those are pretty detailed. Keep in mind November is a tad early for swells here, and when they come swells can get really big really fast. Once again, be very careful of especially lava, it cuts like tiny knifes and you bleed like hell! Take a cut kit/first aid kit, water for drinking and T.P. when you are walking somewhere, you'll need it! I love the Big Island & lived here for several years. From Dec. to Feb. it is the place the locals from other Islands come to get away from thier home crowds. Respect all the locals! It is a wonderful place, I wish I could go too, enjoy!
