Re:is boogie boarding surfing - 2008/10/23 22:47 whilst i may well be a silly sally, i'm not familar with the terminology and i wasn't talking about the sport of euro-trash kings in any case; rather the sport of hawaiian royalty - i've been informed that both male and female royalty surfed standing up and children did the gut sliding...

Re:is boogie boarding surfing - 2009/01/02 19:17 i don't see why everyone is all fired up about this topic. i think the aggression comes from the fact that a lot of stand-up guys have a superiority complex over boogie boarders and feel the need to prop themselves up by saying "i'm a surfer, and you are not". well kids, if you want to feel cool, you are in the wrong sport. please leave and make some room for the people who are in the lineup because we LOVE riding waves. Like waterman, I've spent a lot of time fighting crowds. Lots of summer days i would swim out to point panic and bodysurf because kewalo's is such a zoo. it was still surfing though. i was still riding a wave, and that's what this whole thing is about. just ask mark cunningham. if you think you are cooler than that guy because you stand up, watch A Broke Down Melody and watch him rip on his belly.

Re:is boogie boarding surfing - 2009/01/30 15:44 TATTRATT - I wouldn't call a body boarder a surfer anymore than I'd call a baseball player a cricketer or whatever it is people who play cricket are called. Having said that, there's no need for any of the hostility towards them.

But still, even though I'm on your side in the "great debate", you can't throw wikipedia out there as a reference. Just to prove a point, I took out the word "surfer" from where they were talking about body boarders and put in "individual riding the wave". Anybody can change anything in Wikipedia, and you don't even need an account to do it.

And for the guy who said the origins of body boarding goes back further than surfing, not exactly true. It is generally believed that the origins of surfing go back to polynesians, and some say it was by people who would just stand up in canoes on their way in to shore. However, there is also archeological evidence that shows surfing may have been practiced in Peru around 1000 BC. So, unless there's some physical evidence of a body boarder that goes back more than 3,000 years you've got to tip your hat to the surfers, not the body boarders.
