Re:backpacking in the US - 2007/09/10 10:44 Ive looked into hostels in San Diego and Venice Beach/Santa Monica.. most seem to get pretty good reviews but was wanting to find out about them from a surfers perspective... anyone stayed at any hostels in the area & got first hand knowledge??

Re:backpacking in the US - 2007/09/22 05:26 The surf in Santa Monica and Venice is crap. Worst in the region, actuallly. It's blocked from both summer SW and winter NW pulses. You'll want to try north in Malibu or south in El Segundo.

Basically, anywhere else on the California coastline has better surf except inside the seawall down near the port of Los Angeles.

On a big NW swell, the SM/Venice area will have something surfable, but it's always smaller than anywhere else.
