Re:HELP ABOUT PORTUGAL!!! - 2007/01/19 21:53 Hi Surfboy,

Let's see if I can help you...

Concerning Europe, Portugal is the best bet to score some surf during summertime.

June - Some late spring swells hitting the coast, almost no wind, nice warm temperature, by the end of the month crowd increases because of school hollydays.

Jully - Still some chances of getting a few swells. Burning Hot temperatures, no wind, crowd on the water and on the beach, specially on weekends.

August - Chances of getting more than 0.5-1.0 mts waves are rare, but still you can surf almost everyday. Strong North winds, mostly after lunchtime. Temperatures gets to 40º. Crowded spots and beaches, everyday, but you can still surf peacefully.

Best bet for sure is Peniche. Beacause it's almost an island it can receive almost everywind/swell and still have a decent place to surf.

In Peniche there's severall good Surfcamps, and i recommend www.penichesurfcamp.com 'cause the owner is a friend om mine, and I know he's doing a great job.

You won't be needing a car if you stay on that area, and Minimum age to rent a car in portugal is 21 y.o.

If you want to bring your own gear... a shorty or a 3/2 wet-suit will be enough. Bring small wave boards.

Have Fun!!

Re:HELP ABOUT PORTUGAL!!! - 2007/01/23 18:43 Hi Surfboy,

Normally July swell will not deliver more than 1 mt waves.

Besides Portugal, you could try out North of Spain.

I did a week long surftrip with a couple of friends in June.

Scored some good waves in Doñinos (Galiza) and the went all the way up to the basque country (Spain+France) and scored some good ones in Anglet.

On the way back the ocean went dead flat.

Summertime is always difficult to predict. If you have the chance to plan your vacations without much anticipation... check some wave forecasts first.

Have Fun!

Re:HELP ABOUT PORTUGAL!!! - 2007/02/18 02:08 Dear Surfboy,

Thundercat info is good, there are other parts of Portugal to try in summer. If you check the web you will find a surf school / tour operator working out of Lagos. I have seen them at the Atlantic beaches on almost every day that I have been on holiday - sorry can't remember their name. I have never tried them and therefore cannot pass comment. The surf in summer is hit and miss but that is surfing in europe in the summer full stop.

There are several Atlantic beaches that will pick up any slight swell, namely arrifana, priaia do amado, odeceixie, malhao, sines, monte clerigo to name but a few. Several beaches and tour guides rent boards and wetsuits but I would advise takeing your own if you can.

I do not know about hiring a car under or at 20 years of age but just try all the car hire web sites and check out hire from your own country before you leave.

Hope it helps - happy travels!

Re:HELP ABOUT PORTUGAL!!! - 2007/03/08 22:26 I'm from Ericeira-Portugal, and where we have great waves, and Ericeira is in midle of Portugal, you can always go to other spots!
It´s my opinion but i'm a little suspicious, it's my favourite and local spot!!
