surf buddy(ies) for Central America in Jan? - 2010/08/15 17:26 hey guys,

I'm kicking off New Years Eve 2011 in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica until 1/7... then I wanna travel around Central America for the rest of the month exploring/improving my surf skills.

I'm an independent chick but am chicken to surf alone, so I'm hoping to find a surf/travel buddy (or more!) to join me. I find the buddy system works better for adventures, the wallet, drinking, and travel in general.

I'm pretty low maintenance about where to stay, as long as it's clean & safe. I'm down with hostels (not really a camper though) if that's your steez.

itinerary-wise, I was thinking more Costa R, Panama, Nicaragua, or wherever else that sounds cool... roughly 1/7 thru 1/28 depending on what happens...

let me know if you're interested. or if you have any suggestions/tips too.

good times or bust,
R

Re:surf buddy(ies) for Central America in Jan? - 2010/08/16 06:06 check Nicasurf.com or look up my buddy David Holloway who runs that surfcamp in Popoyo, Nica. He will dial you in. Happy hunting!

Re:surf buddy(ies) for Central America in Jan? - 2010/12/03 04:56 Hey there,

I probably can't help as a surf buddy as I work in a Surf camp in Nicaragua (Miramar, Puerto Sandino) so can't travel around unless I have time off but I thought I could give a perspective of being a girl travelling alone in Nicaragua.

Maker sure you read up on Managua because it is has some very dodgey parts, rogue taxi drivers and general crime. If you are arriving after dark (after 5pm) make sure you have a place to sleep and a registered taxi there as you do not want to be walking around in the dark. Same for catching buses, avoid it in the dark.

Other than that, people have been really friendly to me and I've felt pretty safe out of Managua. The South is very popular for surfing with lots of hostels and lodges, generally more gringos buzzing around and bars etc but this does mean more crowds in the water and the vast majority of surfers I have seen here are guys so you may have to fight for your waves! Up in the North there are fewer crowds, but it is more remote and harder to get around so you will want to travel between camps that will give you a transfer. Also its best to go for places that offer boat trips as you get to see way more waves.

Hope any of that is useful... have fun!

Maddie
