Re:The best place to start surfing! - 2008/10/13 01:33 I would recommend a sandy beach with consistent small waves.
To show You where in the world to find it, You should give us some infos on where You live, how far You're able to go...and so on. Otherwise it's impossible to help.

Re:The best place to start surfing! - 2008/10/14 17:33 No Problem!

I live in Austria.

It is not very important how far it is away from here.

I would go everywhere, where I can learn to surf.

Re:The best place to start surfing! - 2008/10/14 20:57 Ok! From may to october the french coast between Bordeaux and Bayonne is perfect for beginners. Also n/w and s/w Portugal and the Santander region at the spanish north coast. During winter and early sprintime Morocco and Fuerteventura is a good choice.
If You want to go more far in winter, all australian destinations provide good conditions, also Bali, Brazil, Costa Rica and the east+westcoast of USA.
You should not go to destinations which are too remote and underexplored, 'cause You'll find no equipment and support there. At all the above shown places offer board material, accessories and surfschools.
This listing makes no claim to be complete, I'm sure there are a lot of other options.

Re:The best place to start surfing! - 2008/10/19 04:32 Sometimes the best thing to do if you are a beginner is to find a surf school to show you the way. They will also lots of times tell you good spots what kind of board what size wet suit ETC. Either that or if you have a friend that surfs see if they would be will to take a day out and show you the way. Just make sure to use precaution when going out in the water. If you are in doubt about it don't go. When we are new all we want to do is get out there. But make sure to check out the rip tides and all that good stuff. Surfing is a very beautiful fun experience if you do it safely. So make sure to be safe and have fun. Ask local surf shops too where the beginner spots are. Most are more than willing help you in any way that they can. Hope that little bit of info helps.

peace love surf,
Autumn

Re:The best place to start surfing! - 2008/10/19 18:53 i agree with pinkie, go for it with a surf school as this is a very effective way of getting the hang of things as quickly as possible in a soft location, as well as being an advantage for your safety and the safety of others you'll be trying to kamikazi while you're learning. you'll find heaps of surf schools online, some do specialized camps for begginers in very nice locations. a surf school will choose a safe location for your skill level and get you standing up sooner than any other option.

if you haven't spend much time in the ocean, you'd very be well advised to try swimming in it first, between the flags of course (where there's somebody on-hand to resuscitate your lifeless body), until you build your water strength and you can confidently recognise and handle the conditions - body surfing is a very satisfying art in itself and anyone with any claim to being any kind of good surfer is at least a good body surfer. even sponge time is valuable (only as a natural progression towards to a board) as it's a relatively safe option for getting hard-wired to the ocean amidst the seething throng of surfers hitting the water these days.

from austria, try anywhere on the atlantic coast, from france to portugal, during the summer.
