Temprature is better then the canarian because of the warm inlands and swell is coming of the atlantic. several surfspot within taghazout and 15 min walk maximum. For beginners and advanced... Re:Best Winter Destination in Europe - 2008/08/21 20:04 Ok at the risk of sounding all girlie and wuss like i'm still going to ask the question!!!! Is this area of Morocco an ok place for girls to travel to? I have heard stories that you can feel a bit uncomfortable wearing a bikini and getting hassle from men etc.

And is their much to do in the town - I presume there is no bars because of the drink laws - does everyone just go to bed early?

Thanks
Rach

Re:Best Winter Destination in Europe - 2009/01/12 06:40 ok, since i started this thread 6 months ago i feel i better tell all

originally we were gonna go for a sunny winter surf holiday and didnt know where to go - we didnt really fancy Morrocco and the Canaries didnt get great recommendations from everyone so we ended up choosing Lagos in the Algarve. We also decided we cpuldnt wait till Feb and went for New Years Eve instead! And we also booked with www.surfholidays.com as they said it would probably be the best choice for what we wanted (presumablbly cos it was one of the places they offered! Ha ha - no only joking it turned out to be an amazing holiday,

Lagos is a really great town, we thought it would be a big city but its not really - its a small town surrounded by old roman walls dating back years and the streets area all narrow and full of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. Really cool laid back bars and the Portuguese are so nice and friendly.

They gave us a weeks surf lessons and most of the time were taken to a beach called 'Amado' about 25 minutes away. We did surf the main beach in Lagos on one day and it was brilliant but they said it is not that reliable and they normally take people to Amado instead. There was a couple of other beaches they took us to in Sagres also, which is also about 25 minutes away from Lagos. The surf was really good for most of the time (remember we are progressive beginners) although there were great waves for people who were better than us outback - someday!!!!), the beaches are amazing and the surrounding cliffs and backdrops are great, the beaches werent that busy so it was very peaceful out in the water). The water was cold but the temperature outside was blue skies and 15 degrees. At night it dropped right down to about 8 degrees though.

Nitelife was pretty crazy - loads of travellers in the bars and great fun - New Years Eve went on till the next day. I'm not gonna go on and on but Lagos is a great place and i'd say in the summer its amazing - surfing without wetsuits! We will probably be back there or else will pick somewhere else - i might start a 'Best Summer Surf Holiday Destination' thread and see what feedback is like...

Overall: Great Town, great bars and restaurants, really safe, really nice apartments for 4 girls, good surf for beginners, surf beaches are about 25 mins away so need a car or else take the lessons and they bring you to all the beaches, cold but it was winter,

Until next time,

Rach and the Lagos girls! x
