Best Winter Destination in Europe - 2008/07/18 18:20 Hi,

We are looking to go on a winter surf trip (4 girls). We are relative beginners in our mid 20s. We prefer Self-catering apartments and dont want a hostel.

What we are looking for is reliabel surf for beginners, progressive beginners ie can stand no problem and turn (but two have never surfed before!) Plus nice weather so we can sit on the beach and chill out after our surf - a few nice restaurants, bars, cafes, nightlife and a nice village (sorry we're not that hardcore!!!!

Have been told Taghazoute, Algarve, Lanzarote or Fuertaventura are the best for winter.

Thinking of Jan/Feb.

Below are some negatives I have heard - if anyone can tell me any positives that would be great

Taghazoute - too deserted? No bars - not that social?
Algarve - No waves? Lots of driving? Lagos or Sagres?
Lanza - Aggressive locals? petty crime? ugly concrete blocks?
Fuertaventura - Too windy, no nice towns? no nice apartments to stay in?

We are flexible with date of travel so if anyone knows when to go to each place please let me know,

Thanks a lot

Rach xxxx

Re:Best Winter Destination in Europe - 2008/07/18 23:48 Well, this is all a bit true...
An idea is to take an appartement at Agadir with complete kitchen and a rental car, all tourist offices can book this for You. So You have best of both worlds:
Daytime with good surf and sunny days up and down the coast at safe beaches mostly ok for beginners+advanced riders (drive from Agadir to open beaches is 10-15 minutes), and nights with plenty of bars, cafes, discos etc...
For self catering Agadir provides the best food with european quality at the public market in center of town and a big souk with vegetables+fruits in premium quality.

Re:Best Winter Destination in Europe - 2008/07/28 01:04 To Rach,

Don't focus on the negatives. All of your mentioned locations are good (I can't vouch for Morocco I never been). Both of the Canary islands are fine. The last time I surfed Fuerte the locals were no problem at all, in fact very friendly. I can go to my local break and find a tosser (excuse the language) in 30 seconds flat.
I can however, speak very highly of Portugal. All round probably the best place to surf in Europe. If you go in winter the only draw back maybe the size of the surf, it can be gigantic (all other suggested locations will also light up from the same swell). I went in November 06 to find the beaches close to my villa ranging from 15 -20 foot faces and obviously unsurfable. However, when this occurs drive to the Algarve and score head high faces with a mellow crowd in the water.
It will be very difficult to find anywhere in southern Portugal within walking distance of accommodation to surf, but you can score empty epic surf where the locals are cool and the food great.
Car hire (I always use Europcar) and accom can be great value in winter.
Regards
Guy

Re:Best Winter Destination in Europe - 2008/07/28 18:23 Good point Guy,
I think the Algarve sounds great - the fact that it will more mellow and still hot sounds great

Do you know which is better to be based out of Lagos or Sagres - we want a nice town that is also lively!

Cheers,
Rach

Re:Best Winter Destination in Europe - 2008/07/29 02:44 Lagos has more nightlife for sure - but is quite far from the surfing..
